Elon Musk and Joe Rogan appear to be in agreement on the topic of prison time for marijuana-related criminal infractions, based on a quaint exchange on social media. This isn't the first time the two have engaged the topic.

Joe Rogan has always been a very public proponent of recreational marijuana. It's a major part of his comedy act, and enjoying weed is a common topic on his highly successful podcastThe Joe Rogan Experience. Elon Musk isn't a name people naturally associate with smoking, but he's expressed his opinions on the topic several times. Most notably, when Musk appeared as a guest on Joe Rogan's podcast, he famously smoked on camera. It was an action Elon Musk has since referred to as "not wise" since it was the catalyst for a deep probe into the drug use habits of SpaceX employees due to smoking being in violation of NASA's drug policies.

Still, the Tesla CEO clearly had marijuana on the brain as he tweeted, seemingly unprovoked, his issues with the criminal justice system's response to people who smoke pot. He described people doing prison time for marijuana-related crime as "Doesn't make sense, isn't right." The pair of Twitter posts reached Joe Rogan, who then screen-captured the message and posted it on his Instagram page with the caption "Elon is right."

The first part of Elon Musks' tweet likely refers to him potentially getting into trouble with NASA again. The second part, though, relates to one of the more interesting revelations during the start of our coronavirus-induced social distancing. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has gained significant political notoriety due to a public feud with Donald Trump over how best to protect people from the virus. To sum up that conflict, Trump dismissively referred to her as "the woman in Michigan", at about the same time most of the country praised her for her swift decision making in one of the states most impacted by the pandemic. With the national spotlight then focused on her, Gov. Whitmer also ruled marijuana dispensaries as essential businesses, allowing them to remain open during the state's stay-at-home order, and once again sparking a national debate.

Elon Musk highlights the cruel irony that there are many people still serving decades-long prison sentences for marijuana-related crimes, despite that, these days, government officials like Whitmer are making the previously-illegal drug far more accessible. Musk isn't the only person in favor of ending prison sentences for these kinds of convictions either. There are multiple bills in Congress to expunge the records of people charged for illegal marijuana possession or distribution, and many states that have legalized it in recent years, like California, have already started to release some prisoners. While only about 1/10 people in jail for drug-related crimes are there because of marijuana, the issue still disproportionately affects the black community, which has repopularized the conversation about prison sentences as the country protests for racial equality in the criminal justice system today.
