Ellie Kemper had a few years of comedy under her belt before she joined The Office, and her career expanded significantly after the series ended. The actress made her debut in The Office season 5. Before winning the role of Erin Hannon, Kemper spent most of her time acting in comedy sketches, participating in improv theater groups, and working on small projects. She appeared in a few episodes of Comedy Central's Important Things with Demetri Martin and the film, Mystery Team. Later that year, Kemper booked a role on The Office which truly jump-started her career.

During Kemper's time on The Office, the actress subsequently worked on other projects. She appeared on NTSF:SD:SUV:: and voiced multiple characters of Robot Chicken. In 2010, Kemper was seen in the movies Get Him to the Greek and Somewhere. Her most memorable film role came a year later with Bridesmaids, which she then followed with 21 Jump Street. Kemper then portrayed Heather on The Mindy Project, the series created by her co-star from The Office, Mindy Kaling.

When The Office came to an end in 2013, Kemper split her time with TV and movies. She voiced a character in Disney's Sofia the First for multiple years while also acquiring gigs on American Dad! and Comedy Bang! Bang!. In that time, she appeared in four movies including Laggies, Sex Tape, They Came Together, and The Nobodies. In 2015, Kemper starred as the lead role in Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The series ran for four seasons before coming to an end in 2019. In addition to her big Netflix role, Kemper worked on We Bare Bears, Drunk History, Animals., All Hail King Julien, Julie's Greenroom, and The Who Was? Show.

More recently, Kemper voiced roles in The Secret Life of Pets, The Lego Batman Movie, and Smurfs: The Lost Village. In 2018, the actress released her first autobiographical comedy book, My Squirrel Days. In early 2019, Kemper reprised her role for The Secret Life of Pets 2. Then in the summer, she portrayed Gloria Stivic in ABC's special live production of Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons. Kemper also served as a guest judge during season 14 of America's Got Talent.

Next up, the former star of The Office will reprise her role as Kimmy Schmidt for a special interactive episode set to air in 2020. Even though the series came to an end in January, Netflix surprised fans by announcing a new special in May. The exact release date for the interactive episode has yet to be announced. Kemper will also appear in the upcoming romantic comedy, The Stand-In. The movie directed by Jamie Babbit also stars Drew Barrymore, Michael Zegen, Charlie Barnett, and Holland Taylor.
