Elizabeth Olsen's Emmy nod on her work in WandaVision highlights several problems in how Fuller House handled Michelle's absence. In 2016, Netflix premiered the Full House spin-off series. Everyone from the original cast reprised their old roles in varying capacities — except for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played the youngest Tanner daughter.

Initially, Fuller House attempted to make sure that Michelle was regularly referenced in the show. This way, viewers were reminded that she was still very much part of the family despite not appearing physically. Off-camera, there was a lot of contradicting information about whether or not the Olsen Twins would appear. Some claimed that they were being actively courted and that there was a chance that they would join the revival series. Meanwhile, others debunked the notion, with the actresses-turned-fashion designers claiming that they didn't have any contact with the producers or anyone else involved in the project. As the seasons went by, the chances of Michelle appearing became increasingly small, until the final season of Fuller House barely even mentioning her.

This was arguably one of, if not the biggest creative mistake in the show. Michelle was an integral reason for Full House's success, and for a spin-off that leaned on nostalgia, bringing her back, no matter what, should've been a no-brainer. Elizabeth Olsen's recent Emmy nominations for her work on WandaVision further emphasized three big problems with the way Fuller House handled the character's absence. As the sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley who bore a striking resemblance to them, Fuller House should've hired the younger Olsen. Elizabeth maintains that she wasn't contacted for the part, while people from the project claim that offers were turned down. Either way, the Fuller House producers should've done everything in their power to convince her.

Secondly, the people behind Fuller House should've been more open to other options when it came to bringing back Michelle. According to show creator Jeff Franklin, recasting the role of Michelle - even with Mary-Kate and Ashley's sister - was out of the question. This shouldn't have been the case. While the Olsen Twins popularized the character, it's far more important to have Michelle back in the series than being caught up on the idea that she was being played by a different actress. Finally, Elizabeth's recent Emmy nominations for her performance in WandaVision would've brought Fuller House back at the forefront of the mainstream conversation had she been chosen to play Michelle, even just for a couple of times. Since the Marvel Studios series put the actress in a sitcom setting, comparisons between her experience in it and her time playing Michelle, regardless of its extent, would've been inevitable.

Michelle's absence in Fuller House was a gaping hole in the spin-off's narrative. Perhaps, it might have even played a part in its eventual cancelation as the slow sidelining of the character disappointed many loyal fans of Full House. Offering Elizabeth the part, even just for a cameo, could've addressed this issue. If anything, her critically-acclaimed performance in the sitcom-inspired WandaVision proves that she can do it.
