Daniel Radcliffe has plans of pressing ahead with a serious post-Harry Potter acting career. His next move will be to appear in the supernatural horror adaptation, The Woman in Black, followed sometime thereafter with a turn as iconic “Beat Generation” poet Allen Ginsberg in an upcoming indie production Kill Your Darlings.
Kill Your Darlings will mark the feature-length writing and directing debut of John Krokidas. However, the film will feature several young character actors/actresses (in addition to Radcliffe) whose careers are already on the up-and-up.
Variety says that Kill Your Darlings dramatizes the story of how David Kammerer’s (bizarre) murder in 1944 at Columbia University gave birth to the Beat Revolution and united then-young writers/poets like Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac to speak out against the status quo, sparking a counter-cultural revolution that would also eventually give rise to the Hippie movement in the 1960s.
As mentioned before, Radcliffe will be playing Ginsberg. He will be joined by the likes of Elizabeth Olsen as Edie Parker, Kerouac’s wealthy girlfriend (and, eventually, first wife) along with Jack Huston, who will portray Kerourac, and Dane DeHaan as Lucien Carr, one of Ginsberg’s peers who is also attracted to the innovative artist.
Olsen, of course, established herself as a very capable actress with last year’s Martha Marcy May Marlene; she should continue to accumulate some serious indie cred in 2012, with appearances in titles like Silent House and Liberal Arts, along with the “paranormal drama” Red Lights (which will screen during this year’s Sundance Film Festival).
Huston, by comparison, popped up in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, but his most high-profile role to date is definitely that of Richard Harrow on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Similarly, DeHaan looks to impress this year with a role in the found-footage superhero flick, Chronicle, along with parts in Wettest Country from director John Hillcoat (The Road) and The Place Beyond the Pines from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine).
That’s all to say: Kill Your Darlings boasts a terrific cast composed of 20-something stars who should continue to make a great impression in the future; so, hardcore cinephiles, you’ll probably want to keep this one on your radar.
Kill Your Darlings is slated to begin principal photography on location in New York by March 2012.
