Netflix releases the Elite season 2 teaser trailer and announces a September premiere date. Created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, the Spanish teen thriller series features an ensemble cast and takes place at Spain's most prestigious private school, Las Encinas. Elite season 1 premiered in October 2018 on Netflix.

In Elite season 1, María Pedraza stars as Marina Nunier Osuna, the series’ archetypal bad girl. At Las Encinas, she meets new arrivals Christian (Miguel Herrán), Nadia (Mina El Hammani), and Samuel (Itzan Escamilla). During the first eight episodes, Elite address class dynamics, along with modern sociopolitical issues. The aforementioned Montero and Madrona wrote the entire first season, in which filmmaker Ramón Salazar directed five episodes, including the bookend productions. Elite season 1 features supporting performances from Miguel Bernardeau, Jaime Lorente, Arón Piper, and Mexican star Danna Paola. Netflix ordered Elite season 2 less than two weeks after the series first premiered.

Netflix released Elite’s season 2 teaser trailer, which announces the premiere date as Sept. 6. The 52-second clip features a devilish red color palette, complemented by a pounding score that properly emphasizes the psychosexual nature of the thriller series. There’s absolutely no dialogue whatsoever, but rather a montage of characters getting up close and personal while delivering sly grins at the camera. There’s also a bit of foreshadowing, as quick edits show bloody hands in a sink, and a bag full of money. The most relevant portion of the video is approximately 30 seconds long, however the final sequence reinforces the Sept. 6 premiere date and closes out in style with a fourth wall shot. As Elite fans may have already guessed, a major season 1 character unsurprisingly doesn’t appear. Check out the Elite season 2 teaser trailer below.

For Elite season 1, Pedraza brought a significant amount of star power to the show, despite having only a handful of acting credits to her name. Now 23-years-old, the model and ballerina was first “discovered" on Instagram by director Esteban Crespo, who cast Pedraza as the female lead in the 2017 drama Amar. Given the film’s availability on Netflix, Pedraza’s fame has steadily increased since, and she's perhaps best known for portraying Alison Parker in the Spanish Netflix series Money Heist. Earlier this year, Pedraza headlined the Netflix movie Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island?, and she’s currently filming the Spanish feature El verano que vivimos, directed by Carlos Sedes. In 2019, Sedes helmed four episodes of the Spanish drama series High Seas starring Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shannara Chronicles).

For North American audiences, Spanish Netflix series like Elite may not be a viewing priority. Still, they’re worth checking out, especially given the talent of both the filmmakers and main cast members. Plus, it never hurts to consider different perspectives from overseas.
