Elisabeth Moss Joins Vertigo's The Kitchen Comic Book Movie

Elisabeth Moss joins the cast of The Kitchen, an adaptation of the Vertigo comic book about mob wives taking over the business.

The Handmaid's Tale star Elisabeth Moss has joined the cast of The Kitchen, an adaptation of the Vertigo comic book about mob wives taking over the business. Tiffany Haddish was first to sign on for the New Line feature, followed later by Melissa McCarthy. Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) will write the script and also direct, marking her feature film helming debut.

Published by Vertigo, a DC imprint devoted to more adult fare, The Kitchen takes place in the world of Irish mobsters in New York's Hell's Kitchen circa 1970. After the gang's leaders are locked up, their wives must take over running the rackets and doing the dirty work for the Italian mafia. Of course, once the women find out what real power is like, they don't want to give it up.

As reported by THR, Moss has signed on to join Haddish and McCarthy as one of the trio of women at the center of The Kitchen. Moss plays the wife of an abusive husband who overcomes her timid nature as she discovers an affinity for violence. New Line considered several actresses for the movie's third female lead before settling on Moss.

First finding fame as Peggy Olson the ambitious career woman on Mad Men, Moss has risen to become one of TV's most ubiquitous and acclaimed actresses. Last year Moss won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance as June/Offred in Hulu's dystopian series The Handmaid's Tale. Moss returns this year for a second season of the show based on Margaret Atwood's classic novel. Moss previously won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her role in Top of the Lake. Later this year, Moss stars with Casey Affleck and Robert Redford in the crime film Old Man and the Gun. She will also star with Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening in Sony's upcoming adaptation of Chekhov's The Seagull.

While Moss has become a TV powerhouse, she has yet to break through with a truly memorable role in a big movie. The Kitchen, however, sounds like it has all the elements to finally let Moss shine on the big screen. The story sounds crazy and possibly entertaining, and Moss will be teamed with a pair of formidable co-stars in Haddish and McCarthy. As far as the movie's tone, things could get outrageous, if prior adaptations of Vertigo titles are any indication. The Vertigo imprint thus far has spawned the TV series Preacher, Constantine, iZombie and Lucifer, as well as the films Constantine, A History of Violence, V for Vendetta, The Fountain and The Losers.
