The second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed changes to Electro's costume from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with his new outfit contrasting both with his old look and what he wore in the comics. No Way Home will be the MCU's first movie to seriously explore the implications of the Multiverse as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) encountered variants of villains seen in previous Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Along with characters such as Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Lizard (Rhys Ifans), Electro (Jamie Foxx) showed up with an updated look in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, each with subtle changes from their previous incarnations. However, it was Electro's redesign that was most notable.

Electro was first adapted for live-action in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as one of several villains Peter Parker had to deal with while investigating his parents' deaths, as well as doing his best to reconnect with his childhood friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) and protect his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). In that film, Electro was an electrical engineer named Maxwell "Max" Dillon who gained electrical powers after falling into a tank of genetically-engineered electric eels. This origin story differed from the comics, in which Max became Electro after being struck by lightning.

His backstory was not the only change The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made to Electro, and according to the trailer, Spider-Man: No Way Home altered his look once more. Electro's updated appearance seems to be closer to his original comic book design, suggesting that this Electro is a variant of the one who fought Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Here's how Electro's Spider-Man: No Way Home costume compares to what he wore in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as well as what he wore in the comics.

How Electro's No Way Home Costume Compares To Spider-Man Comics

Electro's Spider-Man: No Way Home costume is very clearly inspired by his comic book appearance. In Spider-Man comics, Electro originally wore a green and yellow outfit with lightning bolts on his wrists and chest, as well as a mask with 3 separate points coming out of it. Although Jamie Foxx's Electro is not wearing the skintight green suit for Spider-Man: No Way Home, the yellow lightning covering his body is reminiscent of the comic design. The lightning even forms a kind of mask atop his face that looks very similar to what the character wore in Marvel comics. Of course, whenever Electro is not actively using his powers to channel lightning, he will simply be wearing dark clothes and gloves with a contraption strapped to his chest. This rather plain outfit would allow him to slip under the radar and move undetected, which will likely come in handy for Electro in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

How Electro's No Way Home Costume Compares To The Amazing Spider-Man

Electro's costume in Spider-Man: No Way Home is very different from how he looked in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which had redesigned his appearance from the comics to give him blue skin with blue electrical energy flowing beneath the surface. Excluding the blue skin and lightning, however, the rest of Electro's costume in TASM was simply a nondescript black suit meant to protect his vitals while fighting Spider-Man. The changes for Spider-Man: No Way Home not only better adhere to Electro's comic book costume, but also look much more practical considering his powerset and reflect his background as an electrical engineer. The belt Electro wears in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer looks similar to something he might have worn while working as an engineer, and the harness is likely meant to help channel and perhaps even store electricity on Electro's person until he is ready to use it, which is a much more helpful upgrade for the villain from a plain black suit. The color of Electro's lightning also changes from blue to yellow to stick with the comic book color scheme. Viewers will have to wait until Spider-Man: No Way Home's release to see if the movie made any other changes to Electro or any of Spider-Man's other villains.
