Spider-Man: No Way Home raises questions about what really happened to Jamie Foxx's Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The second trailer for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie indicates that Spider-Man's multiverse villains are all destined to die fighting the web-slinger, and the new footage showed the best look yet at the film's many antagonists. This included a glimpse at Jamie Foxx's return as Electro, his design overhaul, and the character's involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home's epic conclusion.

Electro joined Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Sandman, and The Lizard as confirmed multiverse villains who will fight Tom Holland's Spider-Man. However, Spider-Man: No Way Home's second trailer included a new piece of information for how they are all tied together. Doctor Strange explains to Peter Parker that the broken spell has allowed villains from other universes to visit the main MCU timeline. The twist for Peter is learning that all of these new foes to him are destined to die fighting Spider-Man in their original realities. Some of these villains had their deaths plainly featured in their last big-screen appearance, but several others weren't confirmed to suffer such a fate.

Jamie Foxx's Electro was one of the main villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where he eventually teamed up with Harry Osborn to fight Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. This culminated with Electro and Spider-Man battling at an Oscorp power plant. Electro is only defeated when Spider-Man overloads him with power and electricity, which causes him to explode. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 originally made it seem as though Electro died, but the movie included a tease that he could return. The power bar that remained from Electro eventually flickered with power. Although Peter Parker believed he permanently got rid of Electro as a result of their battle, Sony certainly wanted to leave viewers with the impression that he wasn't dead.

The tease of Electro's survival was something Sony never had the chance to pay off. Plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 were scrapped in favor of the MCU reboot. It was not confirmed that Electro would return in the third solo film for Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. However, that was a possibility based on The Amazing Spider-Man 2's ending. The tease that Electro didn't die was also likely part of Sony's plan to set up their Sinister Six movie. Jamie Foxx's Electro could've returned there alongside many other Spider-Man villains. Sony has yet to make Sinister Six, though, and Spider-Man: No Way Home looks like the studio's new way of bringing a handful of Spidey villains together, Electro included.

Electro's return in Spider-Man: No Way Home could finally confirm that he did die in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This is only possible, though, if Jamie Foxx is playing the same version of the character, which is up for debate because he looks completely different in the MCU movie. The blue, glowing skin is gone and Electro's traditional yellow lightning replaces the blue lighting he had before. That leaves room for an explanation that Spider-Man: No Way Home includes a new version of Electro or shows that Jamie Foxx's character did survive The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and evolve after. Since Doctor Strange teased all of these villains died before, Electro's story could be further explored in either case.
