A brand-new cinematic trailer has been released to celebrate the launch of Blackwood, the newest Elder Scrolls Online expansion. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game, developed by Zenimax Online Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, takes place within the long-running Elder Scrolls universe. The game launched back in 2014 but continues to receive support from Zenimax and Bethesda.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood, the latest expansion for the fantasy MMORPG, is set to take players on an epic and mystical journey into Oblivion. A story trailer for the expansion, released back in May, tells the story of four powerful weapons crafted by an ancient king with the help of the demonic deity Mehrunes Dagon. This ancient tale sets up the expansion, which will see players journey to acquire these four powerful weapons and battle through Mehrunes Dagon's hellish dimension of Oblivion. The Blackwood expansion is also set to introduce Companions, computer-controlled characters who will join the player's adventure and fight beside them.

Publisher Bethesda Softworks has released a new cinematic trailer to commemorate the launch of The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood. The trailer puts strong emphasis on Mehrunes Dagon, a powerful godlike figure familiar to fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and the fiery landscape that he inhabits. When four heroes enter Oblivion they are immediately attacked by Dagon, who attempts to create a portal out of his realm. While the heroes narrowly escape, stealing back the book which formed the portal, Dagon still appears determined to break out into the mortal world.

Zenimax and Bethesda have supported The Elder Scrolls Online for more than five years, but the game's future has become a bit unclear. The game's director, Matt Firor, penned a letter at the end of 2020 which explained certain plans for the game's future. The Gates of Oblivion storyline, which naturally includes Blackwood, was mentioned, but nothing beyond that story was revealed. While it seems unlikely that Zenimax will cease support for The Elder Scrolls Online any time soon, some players are likely eager to learn more about plans moving into 2022.

The Elder Scrolls series is known for having a number of reoccurring elements, with characters and items appearing in each new installment. Mehrunes Dagon, and the fantastical horror of Oblivion, is immediately reminiscent of 2006's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. However, the multiplayer nature of ESOnline means that players' experiences with the Daedric Prince of Destruction will likely be very different when they dive into Blackwood.
