Players of the online RPG Elder Scrolls Online will no longer be forced to go adventuring alone. With the latest trailer for the newest chapter in the Elder Scrolls Online adventure, "Blackwood," Bethesda Softworks is introducing a feature that players will know from Skyrim, NPC companions. "Blackwood" is the first major DLC content drop of 2021 as part of the "Gates of Oblivion" adventure.

Elder Scrolls Online has been a massive hit among RPG fans who wanted to continue exploring the world of Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls series. Since its release back in 2014, Elder Scrolls Online has received several large DLCs called "chapters," which typically introduce new areas to explore as well as some new gameplay mechanics that deepens the gameplay experience. "Blackwood" will introduce the Blackwood zone, new world events, dungeons, quests, a new storyline, and the feature that most Elder Scrolls players are excited about, Companions. NPC companions were a prominent feature in Skyrim, though in that game they were called Followers so as not to be confused with the Companions faction. Lydia is perhaps the most famous NPC companion in Skyrim but there were over 70 potential followers a player could partner with in their adventures.

The latest trailer from Bethesda showcases this mechanic in action, as the player's character is seen interacting with the two NPCs who will be available when "Blackwood" releases. These computer-controlled allies will follow the player around, assisting as they complete their quests. There are two known companions that will be available when "Blackwood" launches. Bastion is an Imperial knight who fights with a fire staff, while Mirri Elendis is a dark elf who is a thief and wields a sword.

Just like in Skyrim, these companions in Elder Scrolls Online will give players more tactics to help defeat those difficult quests. They will also be a boon for solo players who need assistance and don't have friends who can join them for an adventure. Players will also be able to develop friendships with their companions and they might even be able to eventually marry a companion, just like they could in Skyrim.

With a ton of new content dropping for Elder Scrolls Online soon, there are plenty of reasons for players to be excited. Not only are there new places to explore and storylines to untangle, but now they won't have to do it alone. Even though the future of the Elder Scrolls series is somewhat muddy, it's good to know that players can keep living their best life in Tamriel through Elder Scrolls Online.
