2019 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of The Elder Scrolls series and Bethesda is offering a free gift to fans in the form of a digital copy of Morrowind, but the game will only be available for a week, ending March 31, 2019.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was released for Microsoft Windows and the original Xbox in 2002. The Xbox One's backward compatibility means that you can also play Morrowind on Microsoft's latest console. Morrowind represented the jump to 3D for the mainline entries of the Elder Scrolls series and it was met with near-universal acclaim upon release, even though it has since been overshadowed by its superior sequels.
Those who wish to experience Morrowind can do so this week, as Bethesda is letting fans download a free copy of the PC version of the game to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Elder Scrolls series. According to Dark Side of Gaming, the free copy of Morrowind will require the player to install the Bethesda Launcher and to use promo code "TES25TH-MORROWIND" in order to download the game. The code for Morrowind will expire on March 31, 2019.
Todd Howard, director and executive producer of Bethesda Games Studios, has already stated that the company has no desire to remaster old Bethesda titles, so the fans who want to experience Morrowind will have to make do with the original version of the game. The fact that Bethesda has gone on a porting spree with Skyrim shows that the company isn't shy about profiting from their old titles, but it wouldn't really make sense to remake Morrowind when Oblivion and Skyrim offer so much more in terms of content and story.
The fact that the Bethesda Launcher is required to download the free copy of Morrowind might put off some fans who are already frustrated with the number of digital storefronts and company-specific launchers that they already have to deal with on PC, but that is a small price to pay in order to get chased around by Cliff Racers for free.
Bethesda may make an announcement about the mysterious next game in the Elder Scrolls series at E3 2019, in order to get the fans back on board following the Fallout 76 debacle, but E3 is still a few months away, so the Elder Scrolls fans might want to soothe their desire to learn more about the next game in the series by returning to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for free.
