Elden Ring, the expansive open-world fantasy game by developer FromSoftware, takes place in the fictional world of The Land Between, and is definitely not set in Ohio - despite the fact that an ongoing meme indicates otherwise. Some intrepid Elden Ring players have taken action, changing the setting of the game on Wikipedia to reflect that the game does, in fact, take place in Ohio. Though the change on Wikipedia did not last long, the meme has spread like wildfire, and Elden Ring fans are having a field day creating their own Ohio-related jokes.
Elden Ring has a massive, gorgeously detailed open-world map, with a deeply developed storyline and expansive lore. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki and writer George R. R. Martin have given the Lands Between their own unique vibe, with dozens of beautiful vistas and equally dreadful ruins to explore and conquer. At the beginning of Elden Ring, players find most of the world's expansive map shrouded in mystery, making it difficult to see how big Elden Ring's world map actually is. Upon further exploration, players will discover more and more about the world of the Lands Between, and less and less (or, perhaps, nothing) about Cincinnati, Ohio.
The meme began on Wikipedia when an unknown Elden Ring fan updated the game's page to reflect that its setting was in a sort of post-apocalyptic Ohio after the fragmenting of the Elden Ring. From there, the meme gained traction on Twitter, with other fans and players chiming in with their own memes about the Buckeye State. The meme supposes that the hazardous, danger-filled world of the Lands Between accurately reflects the same hazards and dangers of Ohio. Though the Wikipedia changes were short-lived, and Elden Ring is definitely not set in Ohio, it hasn't stopped players and fans from having their own fun with the meme.
Memes About Elden Ring Taking Place In Ohio Are Hilarious (& Everywhere)
One particular thread started with an image posted by @ronnui_, showing that a Google search of the term "Where does Elden Ring take place?" returned a result of Ohio, "sometime after the destruction of the titular Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards, the Great Runes."
From there, more and more players, fans, and native Ohio residents have chimed in, causing the thread to explode with hilarious depictions of Ohio staples "appearing" in the Lands Between. Fantastic photoshops abound (and at least one tweet even extended past state borders to get Gary, Indiana in on the joke).
Elden Ring has very quickly proven itself cannon fodder for internet memes. From player messages labeling all known wildlife as dogs to another player imagining Elden Ring as a cluttered Ubisoft game, FromSoftware's new Soulslike has enough detail, lore, and in-jokes to keep Reddit teeming with memes. The Lands Between are massive and intricately detailed, and are just waiting to reveal the next treasured Elden Ring meme trend.
