Elden Ring is FromSoftware and Bandai Namco's newest project, made in collaboration with renowned fantasy author George R. R. Martin. The game was initially announced back at E3 2019 but was only recently given the release date of January 21st, 2022. As the spiritual successor to Dark SoulsElden Ring appears to have adopted numerous trademark mechanics present in the Souls series. One of the most unique features in Dark Souls was its multiplayer style, which enabled simultaneous co-op and PvP gameplay. Thankfully for players looking to experience Elden Ring with friends, it appears this system is making a return.

Dark Souls' multiplayer launched with a unique function, in which players could imbue themselves with the power of Humanity (or an Ember in Dark Souls 3). After having one's Humanity restored, players could summon friendly players but also become vulnerable to invasion by enemy players. This style of multiplayer interaction had its appeals and drawbacks, as players were able to help one another conquer difficult boss fights, but still had the option to avoid PvP if they so desired.

Elden Ring's multiplayer co-op has been confirmed through statements by FromSoftware, Bandai Namco, and showcased through the Elden Ring gameplay reveal trailer. Players will be able to assist one another in some form, though its limitations have not yet been explained. Elden Ring has been confirmed to have an open-world style of gameplay, with players using a spirit-like goat-horse creature to travel long distances. Whether players will be able to partake in multiplayer anywhere in the world, or only in specific areas, has not yet been revealed.

Elden Ring Gameplay Reveal Trailer Multiplayer Summon

Given the evidence from the Elden Ring gameplay trailer, it appears that the overall style of Dark Souls multiplayer has returned. A player character can be seen holding a cubic object in the trailer, hoisting it high with some sparkling white particles emanating from it. Shortly after, the same player is seen fighting alongside two other warriors bathed in white light. This aura is similar to the aura surrounding friendly phantoms that can be summoned in Dark Souls, with darker shades usually being assigned to invading players.

It is currently unknown whether or not players will be able to invade one another in Elden Ring. The section of the gameplay reveal trailer that shows player characters partaking in co-op sees them battling a knight resembling a player character, but with no aura. While this could be one of many human-like enemies within Elden Ring, it could also be an invading player. Dark Souls offered items that made it possible for invaders to hide their auras, and while it is possible Elden Ring also has these items, it is also possible that invading won't be available.

It appears Elden Ring will be following the Soulslike gameplay style of FromSoftware's other hit titles. Elden Ring's multiplayer has been confirmed in a co-op style for up to four players, with invasion-styled PvP not yet confirmed. Players will occupy the role of a Tarnished, and set about to claim a mysterious artifact known as the Elden Ring, from which the game likely derives its name. Elden Ring is set to release early next year for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms.
