George R.R. Martin is probably best known for his Song of Ice and Fire novels, the basis for the popular Game of Thrones television series. However, the author is also working on Elden Ring, a much-anticipated and long-awaited collaboration with FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki. While news of the game has been scarce, interesting tidbits about Miyazaki and Martin continue to trickle out, including what the Elden Ring director's favorite George R.R. Martin book actually is.

In the years since it was first announced, news regarding Elden Ring has been difficult to find. The game was expected for a 2020 release date, which obviously didn't happen, and now fans are eagerly awaiting news of a 2021 release. Meanwhile, fans of Miyazaki's studio have been enjoying Bluepoint Games' Demon Souls remake on PS5 and Martin has been working on his upcoming novel, The Winds of Winter.

George R.R. Martin's projects are notoriously delayed, especially when it comes to the author's own writing. While rumors that Martin's writing may have been holding up Elden Ring's development remain unconfirmed, the author has written several novels outside of his A Song of Ice and Fire series. So, what is Miyazaki's favorite Martin book? It's actually Fevre Dream, a 1982 novel about vampires in the American South.

How Fevre Dream Influenced Miyazaki To Work With Martin

According to an interview with Xbox Wire, in which Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed Elden Ring and working with George R.R. Martin, Miyazaki's favorite Martin novel is Fevre Dream. Set during the antebellum period of the American South, the novel is about steamboat captains on the Mississippi River and vampires. In fact, Mizayaki loves Fevre Dream so much, he cites it as the main reason he wanted to work with Martin on Elden Ring.

Fans of Miyazaki and FromSoft games might not be too surprised to learn that a novel about vampires is his favorite Martin book. "Soulsborne" games are enshrined in Gothic and supernatural traditions, so it shouldn't be too shocking that Miyazaki loves a novel about vampires in 1800s America. Fans familiar with lore in Demon Souls and Bloodbourne can see how Mizayaki might be enamored with a novel like Fevre Dream - even though FromSoftware games have traditionally featured lots of elements found in A Song of Ice and Fire (like dragons, knights, and bloody battle scenes) as well.

Until more Elden Ring news releases, fans will have to be left eagerly awaiting new information. In the meantime, small details about Elden Ring's development, Hidetaka Miyazaki, and George R.R. Martin will have to suffice. Still, it's pretty interesting that a vampire novel from 1982 is what brought these two celebrated creators together for the project.
