Godrick the Grafted may be one of the first fights in Elden Ring to truly challenge players in their journey to become the Elden Lord, but his sub-boss Margit the Fell Omen can be an equally formidable foe. The large, horned being defends Stormveil Castle where a Shardbearer resides, taking on Tarnished who dare to fight Godrick for his piece of the Elden Ring. However, despite the ferocity with which Margit fends off ambitious Tarnished, the reasons behind his partnership with Godrick remain clouded in the confusing mists of Elden Ring's lore.

[Warning: some spoilers for Elden Ring follow.]

To understand Margit, one first has to understand who Godrick is. As one of the Shardbearers, Godrick is a demigod child of the first Elden Lord Godfrey and Queen Marika. Despite this powerful lineage, Godrick has always felt inadequate in comparison to his siblings and especially his father. As a result, Godrick grafts the limbs of fallen Tarnished onto his body to obtain and display his power. This has resulted in his reputation falling into disrepair, and even his fellow siblings in the Golden lineage of Elden Ring look down on him.

Margit assists Godrick in part because of the latter's terrible reputation. Later into Elden Ring, it is revealed that Margit the Fell Omen is the false identity of Margott the Omen King, a sibling of Godrick's and a fellow Shardbearer. Godrick's terrible reputation and insecurity bring unwanted attention to himself, and the number of limbs grafted onto his body proves that many Tarnished - like the player - target Godrick as the first Shardbearer in Elden Ring to take down. Though no lore or dialogue has been found that explicitly states why Margott defends Stormveil Castle, deductive reasoning leads one to the conclusion that Margott wants to stop Tarnished from claiming any of the Elden Ring's shards. In doing so, Margott can keep challengers away from a path that eventually leads to himself becoming the target of ambitious Tarnished.

Margott Actually Loathes Godrick In Elden Ring

Margott's selfish intentions are revealed when Tarnished approach him in battle. He calls Godrick and the Shardbearers who must be defeated before approaching him traitors: "Ahh... Godrick the Golden. The twin prodigies, Miquella and Malenia. General Radahn. Praetor Rykard. Lunar Princess Ranni... Wilful traitors, all." Though the children of Marika battled each other, Margott shows a strong sense of rationality that can power through his hatred. With his siblings keeping their shards, none of the exiled Tarnished of Elden Ring could become the Elden Lord and challenge his powers as a demigod. Resent them as fallen traitors he might, Margott knows that by attempting to keep his siblings alive as he did in Stormveil Castle, he himself does not need to worry about his power.

Nevertheless, Margott may have had a soft spot for his insecure brother that compelled him to defend him. After all, Margott refuses to call Godrick by his more derogatory title, the Grafted: He instead refers to him as Godrick the Golden, showing a willingness to admit his relationship with him and bestow upon Godrick the honor of his family line. Such an interesting, complex reason behind Margott's actions is a testament to the amazing lore of Elden Ring.
