Speaking with EDGE Magazine, Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki listed a few of the properties that influenced the upcoming role-playing game, including The Lord of The Rings and RuneQuest. With Elden Ring's release now less than two months away, developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment have been keen to more regularly share fresh details about the experience.

During The Game Awards 2021, FromSoftware unleashed a lengthy story trailer that teased what players should expect from several of its main characters. Malenia The Severed, the repeatedly shown red-haired warrior woman, will play a pivotal role in Elden Ring's lore, according to the newest trailer. The story teaser additionally showcased another glimpse at General Radahn, aka The Conqueror Of The Stars, and raised further questions about his magical prowess and the meaning of his ominous epithet. Evidently, the world of Elden Ring remains shrouded in mystery; given some of the game's influences, it's easy to see why.

In a recent interveiw with EDGE Magazine (via Wccftech), Hidetaka Miyazaki told the publication it was difficult to narrow down just a single influence for Elden Ring. The Director did, however, cite multiple sources of inspiration that developers referenced during the creative process, such as The Lord of the Rings and Michael Moorcock's The Eternal Champions novels. Aspects of tabletop role-playing games like RuneQuest informed Elden Ring's creation as well, Miyazaki divulged. He added, "there are a lot of motifs and themes that I was able to pick from these various works that had an effect on the development of Elden Ring."

Why Hidetaka Miyazaki Wont Play Elden Ring

The Lord of the Rings and RuneQuest influences, as well as those of other fantasy properties, seem evident based on what's been shown of Elden Ring, thus far. Such inspirations are bound to become more readily apparent once players can freely explore the open world in a couple of months.

Crafted in conjunction with A Game of Thrones novelist George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring takes place in a world known as The Lands Between. This particular adventure, like other modern FromSoftware experiences before it, seems as though it will be steeped in lore for eagle-eyed observers to uncover. And, fortunately, the wait to do just that is quickly drawing to a close.
