Elden Ring offers players a variety of gestures that can impact the game in unpredictable ways. These can be found pretty much everywhere and be unlocked in many different ways. Although gestures in Elden Ring mainly serve as a way of communication between players, some can provoke a reaction from NPCs or even unlock secret areas. There are two locations the Elden Ring community has discovered that can be unlocked with a gesture; both of them require the Erudition gesture and are located in Liurnia of the Lakes.

Elden Ring is not the first FromSoftware game that locks content behind gestures. Indeed, Dark Souls 3 took this concept much further than Elden Ring by hiding a whole secret area behind the Path of the Dragon gesture. This region was called Archdragon Peak, and in it, players could find multiple items, unique weapons, and even bosses they would never otherwise see without knowing how to access this secret area.

How to Gesture in Elden Ring

An Elden Ring player learning the Curtsy Gesture from an NPC in Roundtable Hold

Gestures in Elden Ring can be performed by opening the menu, navigating to the slots on the bottom right side, and using the action button to select one. Players can only have up to six chosen at a time but can switch them by any they have acquired by following the proper prompt buttons shown at the bottom of the screen. For those playing on the PlayStation, gestures can be associated with a directional movement of the controller. To use it during the game, players must simply hold Triangle and perform the movement associated with the gesture they wish to use.

Blaidd's Gesture Secret in Elden Ring

Elden Ring Mistwoods Ruins Blaidd Church Of Elleh

An example of a gesture being used to interact with an NPC can be found during Blaidd's questline. In the Mistwood, located in eastern Limgrave, players will be able to find Blaidd for the first time by following the wolf howls to the Mistwood Ruins. At first, he will be very high up atop the ruins and cannot be interacted with until players visit merchant Kale, one of Elden Ring's traveling merchants, in the Church of Elleh to learn the Finger Snap gesture. After that, players can approach Blaidd and perform that gesture, and he will jump down from the ruins to talk to the player.

Patches' Gesture Secret in Elden Ring

Elden Ring Murkwater Cave Patches Location Map

Another place where a gesture can be used to unlock a secret in Elden Ring can be seen with Patches, who can be found for the first time in Murkwater Cave, near the Murkwater River. Inside the cave, players will eventually meet FromSoftware's recurring character Patches as a boss fight. After he loses about 75% of his HP, Patches will surrender, and if players stop attacking him, they will receive the Grovel for Mercy gesture.

If players attack Patches again after befriending him, he will tell players to surrender when they get low on health, after which players can use the Grovel for Mercy gesture in Elden Ring to make him stop attacking. Doing this will reward players with the Extreme Repentance gesture.

Erudition Gesture Secrets in Elden Ring

Elden Ring Converted Tower Map Location Memory Stone

The two places where players can use gestures in Elden Ring to unlock new areas are the Converted Tower and the Converted Fringe Tower in Liurnia of the Lakes. The Converted Tower is located in the southwest region of the map. It will simply require players to use the Erudition gesture in front of the statue in the middle of the tower to spawn a magical ladder that leads to one of Elden Ring's Memory Stones. To unlock the Erudition gesture, players will need to give Thops, found at the Church of Irith, the second Glintstone Key that players will find in the Raya Lucaria Academy.

While in Raya Lucaria, players should take the time to make sure they also collect one of Elden Ring's Glintstone crowns, which is necessary for the final gesture secret in Elden Ring. There are multiple types of Glintstone Crowns, but players can find the first easily once they are near the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace.

From this Site of Grace, players must turn left in the hallway and hit the empty bookcase on the other side of the room to find one of Elden Ring's Illusory Walls. After that, jump left at the balcony and climb the rocks at the end of the path to find the Olivinus Glintstone Crown.

Elden Ring Fringe Converted Tower Map Location

The second location where the Erudition gesture in Elden Ring hides a secret is the Fringe Converted Tower, which can be found in the northeastern region of Liurnia of the Lakes. This tower has a magically locked door which requires players to perform the Erudition gesture while wearing one of the many Glintstone Crowns to be unlocked. Once this is done, climbing the Converted Fringe Tower will reward players with the Cannon of Haima and the Gavel of Haima sorceries.
