FromSoftware recently revealed an upcoming free Elden Ring update focused on colosseum combat, but this DLC probably won't bring an end to post-launch support of the game. The developer's past titles have received robust and popular add-on content, including the Old Hunters expansion for Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3's two-part DLC Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City. Fans have been patiently waiting for news of Elden Ring DLC, and the upcoming colosseum update is unlikely to be players' final adventure in the Lands Between.Following the announcement of the free Elden Ring colosseum update, industry insider Jason Schreier (via Twitter) claims that news of additional DLC is likely to arrive soon. Many fans have speculated that the three colosseums strewn across the Lands Between would be unlocked by a paid expansion, but they are surprisingly being opened as free DLC instead. Schreier believes that FromSoftware is launching this free PvP update to pave the way for the announcement of a full-blown Elden Ring expansion, which will likely take place during The Game Awards 2022 later this week. Elden Ring Can Support A Wide Range Of DLC Content

Elden Ring has an in-depth multiplayer system similar to past FromSoftware soulslikes, but the upcoming colosseum update promises to make PvP showdowns even more intense. The free Elden Ring colosseum DLC content will let Tarnished warriors organize their own matches to face off in 2v2 duels, chaotic free-for-alls and organized team fights. The three colosseums are located in Limgrave, Leyndell and Caelid, making it easy to join in on multiplayer combat from anywhere in the Lands Between. It remains unclear whether players will win prizes in the Elden Ring colosseums, but all should be revealed when the update launches on December 7.

Colosseums will add a ton of variety to Elden Ring's multiplayer matchups, but the world of the Lands Between is large enough to support actual expansions too. The open-world nature of the fantasy epic could lead to multiple Elden Ring DLCs that bring players to unique locations, with the base game's lore already hinting at several possible destinations. For example, the legendary Japan-inspired Land of Reeds could make an effective expansion thanks to its mystery and distinct style. The mysterious demigod Miquella, who is referenced but never encountered in Elden Ring, would also be a worthy subject for a lengthy DLC.

Despite the impending release of the colosseum DLC, Elden Ring fans shouldn't abandon hope for a more extensive expansion. The free PvP update will focus primarily on multiplayer, and no new locations will be added to the massive map of the Lands Between. Given the massive size and success of Elden Ring, it seems inevitable that an ambitious paid expansion will be announced in the near future.
