Of the many mysteries found throughout Elden Ring, one that still puzzles players nearly two months post-launch is the purpose of the mysterious coliseums scattered about across the Lands Between. Recently, however, one dataminer discovered information hidden in the game's files that sheds more light onto what these arenas could be used for in possible Elden Ring DLC or what they might have been used for before the overall concept was potentially cut from the game.

In the Lands Between, almost everything the Tarnished can see can be explored at some point throughout their journey. Arguably the most noteworthy exception to this would be the coliseums found in Limgrave, Caelid, and Leyndell. Players have speculated their purpose since the title's release back at the end of February, with some fans believing that these areas will have a PVP focus and become available as part of DLC. One modder managed to even generate a potential preview of what this could look like with an Elden Ring PVP mod set in the coliseums. After further inspection, however, one fan may have found more information that reveals these arenas' true purpose.

YouTuber Sekiro Dubi posted an in-depth look at some of the information they uncovered using DSMapStudio, a fan-created map editor for FromSoftware's Souls-like titles. The software reveals many of the technical elements hidden throughout the structures, including "dummy" enemies that are not fully rendered as well as a site of grace. Sekiro Dubi speculates that these were conceived to be gladiatorial battle settings where combatants would fight a variety of foes.

Sekiro Dubi also indicates that these arenas may pop up in a DLC that takes place before the events of Elden Ring. This would be nothing new for FromSoftware, and follow an example set with the original Dark Souls' Artorias of the Abyss DLC. Coincidentally, that also had a notable coliseum setting that was used for PVP combat, though not always in an official capacity.

The coliseums in Elden Ring are very large, and take up significant portions on an already densely populated map. With this in mind, it feels out of place for them to have been left in the game with no purpose. While no DLC has been announced as of yet, it makes sense that players would assume these would be involved in some capacity given FromSoftware's history. If Sekiro Dubi's discoveries are any indication of how they will be used, however, this would be a bit of uncharted territory for the developer.
