The embattled Pro Evolution Soccer replacement eFootball 2022 is getting an update later this month on October 28, 2021, which is deliberately looking to resolve the many of the issues from its tumultuous launch. Publisher and developer Konami posted a public apology a day after the game’s release, citing some of the negative feedback players gave the new football simulation game and assuring them it plans to continuously update the game with quality improvements and more content.

Some of the game’s issues, which Konami mentioned in their apology, include problems with game balance, poor character models and animation, janky physics, a lack of content, and other technical issues. Many of the issues that players have encountered with the game were previously seen in a leaked gameplay video almost a month before its launch, so some expressed frustration upon discovering that these issues made it into the final game. The disappointment with eFootball 2022 rendered it Steam's worst-rated title.

The official eFootball Twitter account posted an update for players, apologizing once again for “inconveniences” with the game and announcing that version 0.9.1 of eFootball 2022 will be rolled out on October 28, 2021. The update will supposedly focus on fixing the issues that users have already reported - along with ones that were recently brought to their attention. While the announcement didn’t detail which of the game’s many issues the patch plans to resolve, the studio did mention that it will publish more updates and details in the future while addressing feedback and fan requests.

Disastrous video game launches have become a concern over the past few years, with many large titles coming out with more than a handful of issues - of which may either ruin a game's experience or simply make the game unplayable, causing some to feel wary about buying games right at launch. Just last year, CD Projekt RED released Cyberpunk 2077 after numerous delays, but the game was wrought with countless issues; one of which saw Cyberpunk 2077 unplayable on previous-generation consoles.

It’s certainly disappointing for longtime fans of Pro Evolution Soccer to see the football simulation series fall from grace upon launch. Having eFootball become free-to-play with the intention of introducing microtransactions was already a concerning sign for the franchise, and eFootball 2022’s rocky launch casts even more doubt into the series’ future. Hopefully, Konami is able to start righting its ship with the game’s upcoming update later this month.
