Timothée Chalamet stars as Edward Scissorhands' son alongside Winona Ryder in a new Super Bowl ad. The 1990 film directed by Tim Burton is one of the movies that helped Burton's career take off. In the years prior, Burton had made a name for himself with both Batman and Beetlejuice. His idiosyncratic aesthetic has become ubiquitous with the director and the film is also credited as one of Johnny Depp's breakout roles. Depp plays the titular character in the film opposite Winona Ryder as Kim Boggs, his love interest.

Edward Scissorhands' condition becomes permanent after his creator's death and much of the film follows him as he tries to lead a normal life as a humanoid shut out from his suburban community. The film ends with Edward's disappearance from the rest of the community he had come to know and love, including Ryder's Kim, who refuses to see him so he remembers her as she was in their youth. Edward Scissorhands became a cult classic over the years and holds a special place in the hearts of people who have long struggled to fit in to what society deems normal.

The commercial, for Cadillac's new all-electric vehicle, begins with Ryder's narration, similar to the film. Chalamet is Edgar, the son of the film's titular character and the commercial follows him through his day as he deals with the challenges of having scissors for hands. Edgar ruins everything from a game of pick-up football to his job at the deli. When Kim sees Edgar using a VR headset to drive a car, she decides to get him a car with hands-free driving capabilities, perfect for someone with his condition. The commercial ends with Ryder's narration, saying "Edgar drove off into the sunset", but that he still makes it home for dinner, a much happier ending than the original film

Chalamet looks uncannily similar to Depp's Scissorhands in the commercial. From the hair to the makeup and the outfit, Chalamet is perfect in the role, capturing the original character's detachment from normalcy. Contrasted against Ryder's Kim and her suburban normalcy, the trailer is a subtly hilarious nod to the original film. For fans of Chalamet, it's a chance to see him again after hopes were dashed that his latest film, Dune, would release before the end of 2020.

Chalamet is certainly an actor to watch - his roles in Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name rocketed him to the front of the industry, with the latter earning him an Oscar nod for Best Actor. Of course, comparisons will be made between young Depp and Chalamet, but Depp is a touchy subject in Holllywood these days. Chalamet is about to have his big moment, though, when he debuts as Paul Atreides in Dune in October. The commercial also makes a good case for a follow-up role in a sequel to Edward Scissorhands. Although a sequel hasn't been discussed, if it were to come to fruition, consider the Cadillac commercial Chalamet's audition.
