Update: Director Doug Liman has revealed Jez Butterworth is currently working on the Edge of Tomorrow 2 script. The original article follows

Emily Blunt provides a brief update on Edge of Tomorrow 2, revealing a new screenplay is currently in the works. The 2014 original, which starred Blunt and Tom Cruise, performed modestly at the box office by grossing $370.5 million worldwide against an $178 million production budget. Poor marketing was likely to blame in this instance, however, since Edge of Tomorrow earned positive reviews from viewers and critics, who praised it as an entertaining blend of Groundhog Day and Aliens. The performances of Blunt and Cruise also received high marks, and the movie's following has only grown in the years since its original release.

That response is what paved the way for a sequel, which has been in development for a while now. Scheduling has been a key issue, as the principal players (Blunt, Cruise, and director Doug Liman) have all been working on other projects for the time being. Still, everyone remains committed to Edge of Tomorrow 2 and plans to make it at some point. But now, it looks like the script has to be finished before filming can begin.

While speaking with IndieWire, Blunt was asked about Edge of Tomorrow 2. She said Cruise had approached her about it prior to her filming Mary Poppins Returns, but she had to turn it down due to her commitment to the Disney film. Additionally, she teased Liman's "awesome idea" that needs to be put on paper:

“Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it. There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.”

This is more evidence that suggests Edge of Tomorrow 2 is getting a rewrite. Back in October 2017, Liman himself said a script was in place, only to say a script was being worked on as recently as January. The reasoning for any revisions are unknown, but it's important to note that movies go through multiple drafts all the time. From the sound of things, Cruise and Liman were ready to go in December 2016 (two months before Blunt started filming Mary Poppins, as she indicated), so the creative team has plausibly had a story in mind for some time. Most likely, this new script Blunt is referring to is to simply fine tune aspects of the first versions so the sequel can live up to the standard set by its predecessor. Edge of Tomorrow was a pleasant surprise a few years ago, but now there are expectations for a followup.

Liman, who is now in post-production on Chaos Walking, hopes to make Edge of Tomorrow 2 next. The trick, as it's always been, is finding time when everyone is free to do it. Cruise is set to reprise his classic role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell this summer for 2019's Top Gun 2 and Blunt is locked in as Dwayne Johnson's co-star for Jungle Cruise. Should Edge of Tomorrow 2 finally move forward, it probably won't be until some point in 2019. Everyone involved is obviously passionate about the material, so hopefully they get to see the followup come into fruition.
