Starring Hailee Steinfeld in the main role, The Edge Of Seventeen came out in 2016 and tells the story of a sad and angry teenage girl named Nadine who is dealing with the death of her dad. To make matters worse, her best friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), has fallen for Nadine's brother.

This film is beloved as it offers a fresh take on the classic story of teen angst and it proves that growing up is tough for everybody. There are many other well-done films in the same genre. Here are 10 movies like The Edge Of Seventeen that everyone needs to see.

10. Love, Simon (2018)

Based on the young adult novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, the film adaptation stars Nick Robinson as the main character, Simon, who is hiding the fact that he's gay from his friends and family.

He has a pen pal relationship with someone who calls himself "Blue," and he feels that he can really be himself and say what he wants to say. This movie is perfect for fans of The Edge Of Seventeen as both Simon and Nadine are characters who feel misunderstood. It also feels like they would be good friends as they're both cynical and smart.

9. Paper Towns (2015)

Jaz Sinclair, Halston Sage, and Nat Wolff in Paper Towns

Paper Towns is also based on a young adult novel. Directed by Jake Schreier and adapted from the John Green book from 2008, the main characters are neighbors Margo Roth Spiegelman and Quentin Jacobson, who goes by Q.

Played by Cara Delevingne, Margo disappears, and Nat Wolff's character, Q, is left trying to solve the mystery and pick up the pieces. Just like Nadine, Q doesn't feel like a typical teen. Both characters become obsessed with something that is holding them back from maturing: Nadine realizes she's been a jerk and should be supportive of Krista and her brother's relationship, just like Q has to move on from Margo in order to grow up.

8. The First Time (2012)

The 2012 film The First Time is also a great film for people who loved The Edge Of Seventeen. The best part about this movie is that the characters actually speak like real teens and they show so much emotion and vulnerability throughout the course of the story.

Dave Hodgman (Dylan O'Brien) and Aubrey Miller (Britt Robertson) start chatting at a party, and the movie is about their interactions over the next few days. It's a sweet film that has a similar tone to The Edge Of Seventeen.

7. To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

Another great teen film is To All The Boys I've Loved Before. It was a very buzzy Netflix movie and for good reason: the adaptation of Jenny Han's book is charming and sweet.

Like The Edge Of Seventeen, this movie shows that high school is hard for basically every student and that there are so many ways to be embarrassed. Nadine is constantly saying awkward things, whether she's admitting who she has a crush on or acting immaturely, and Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) is humiliated when her letters to her crushes are sent to them.

6. Everything, Everything (2017)

Adapted from the YA book by Nicola Yoon, Everything, Everything came out in 2017 and tells the story of Maddy (Amandla Stenberg). She can't go outside because of her autoimmune disease called SCID. She becomes drawn to Olly (Nick Robinson, the star of Love, Simon), who lives on her street.

While Nadine doesn't have an illness and she can definitely go outside, she does feel pretty stuck in her ways and she's not really opening herself up to other people or opportunities.

5. The Art Of Getting By (2011)

The 2011 film The Art Of Getting By is a quiet, chill film and has a similar feeling to The Edge Of Seventeen.

It stars Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore as Sally Howe and George Zinavoy, two teenagers who connect and seem to share a real bond. George hates being in school and is finding it totally impossible to apply himself. Nadine and Sally both seem to have lost their confidence and they're both struggling to be happy. The Art Of Getting By was called Homework before.

4. Some Kind Of Wonderful (1987)

Written and directed by John Hughes, the 1987 film Some Kind Of Wonderful may not be as talked about as Pretty In Pink or The Breakfast Club but it's just as good.

The movie focuses on a love triangle between Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), her best friend Keith Nelson (Eric Stoltz), and rich girl Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson). Watts loves Keith so it's definitely tough that he loves Amanda. The Edge Of Seventeen has a love triangle of sorts between Nadine, Krista, and Nadine's brother, so these two films feel kind of similar.

3. Lady Bird (2017)

Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) feels like Nadine's cynical, tough older sister. It would be easy to see the two of them appearing in the same movie, so the 2017 film Lady Bird is another pick for fans of The Edge Of Seventeen.

Both Lady Bird and Nadine have stopped believing that they can have fun in high school or be understood by their peers or families. And both films are both intelligent and absolutely hilarious.

2. Someone Great (2019)

Someone Great DeWanda Wise Gina Rodriguez Brittany Snow

The 2019 Netflix film Someone Great has been praised as it focuses on friendship rather than the protagonist needing to find love. Gina Rodriguez's character, Jenny Young, finds herself single as she's about to move to San Francisco to work for Rolling Stone. This is a huge deal for her as she's a music writer.

The Edge Of Seventeen and Someone Great have something in common: the realization that friends have your back and are a crucial part of your identity. While it takes Nadine until the end of the film to appreciate Krista, Jenny does know this from the beginning of the movie.

1. Clueless (1995)

Clueless

Clueless is considered a major classic and it feels like a precursor to so many great contemporary movies about being a teenager. The film will be particularly enjoyable for fans of The Edge Of Seventeen.

Just like Nadine has preconceived notions of how she should think and act, which just ends up making her miserable and alone, Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) needs to get over herself so she can be content. Of course, in the meantime, she wears a lot of fabulous outfits, whereas Nadine wears the same blue jacket a lot, but the two stories do have a lot in common.
