There have been some tremendous coming-of-age movies released throughout history and that is especially true in recent years. One of the best of that bunch is The Edge of Seventeen. Released in 2016, it tells the story of a teen girl struggling with the loss of her dad and the fact that her best friend starts dating her brother.

One aspect that made this film work so well is the remarkable cast. It boasts a spectacular combination of young talents who would go on to become stars and veteran actors with tons of experience. You can find them all in other great films and TV shows.

Meredith Monroe - Dawson's Creek

Andie McPhee Dawsons Creek

Starting nearer the bottom of the cast list, Meredith Monroe doesn't have a major role in The Edge of Seventeen. She appears as Greer Bruner, the wife of Max, the teacher who the protagonist (Nadine) forms a bond with. Her appearance is limited to when Nadine visits their home.

Meredith Monroe is a veteran actor with many credits to her name. Her most notable role probably came on Dawson's Creek. She appeared in 69 episodes on the popular teen drama as Andi McPhee. Monroe debuted in season two, joined the main cast for seasons three and four, and returned as a guest in the final season.

Nesta Cooper - Bliss

On the flip side of the prior entry, Nesta Cooper is someone who is just getting started in their career. Other than a few guest spots on TV, The Edge of Seventeen marked Cooper's first big role. She played Shannon, a good friend of Nadine's brother Darian.

Cooper had some key roles in things like Netflix's Travelers and AppleTV+'s See. Her most recent appearance came in Amazon Prime's 2021 flick, Bliss. It centers on a man who gets told that he's living in a simulation. Cooper plays Emily, the daughter of Owen Wilson's character.

Eric Keenleyside - Once Upon A Time

Tom Franklin is one of the film's most important characters even if he doesn't get a ton of screen time. Tom is Nadine's father who died of a heart attack and their bond is what makes his loss so difficult for her. He is played by Eric Keenleyside.

You may not know Keenleyside by name but you might recognize his face thanks to dozens of credits dating back to the '80s. He scored a recurring spot on Once Upon a Time for seven episodes across multiple seasons as Maurice, the father to Belle of Beauty and the Beast fame.

Hayden Szeto - Truth Or Dare

While his best work besides this was probably two episodes each in What We Do In The Shadows and The Good Place, his biggest was in another film. In 2018, Szeto played Brad Chang in Truth or Dare, a guy who is forced to come out of the closet to his dad.

Alexander Calvert - Supernatural

Alexander Calvert as Jack in Supernatural

This is a case where someone moved on from a relatively small part in The Edge of Seventeen to nab the biggest role of their career. Alexander Calvert shows up as Nick Mossman, a boy who Nadine is very attracted to. He's more of a looming presence than a character in it.

However, soon after this film hit, Calvert scored a huge role. He played Jack Kline/Belphegor, the son of Lucifer, on Supernatural. He started as a guest in the season 12 finale before joining the main cast where he remained until the series ended.

Kyra Sedgwick - The Closer

It doesn't get much better when it comes to veteran actors than Kyra Sedgwick. From roles as a leading lady to scene-stealing supporting parts, she has done it all. Sedgwick gets to shine as Mona Franklin, Nadine's mother who struggles with their relationship.

There are almost too many movies and series to pick from Kyra Sedgwick's filmography. However, her greatest was in The Closer. She had the lead role as Brenda Leigh Johnson, an interrogator who closed out cases. The performance earned her both a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Blake Jenner - American Animals

Like the film's lead, Haley Lu Richardson is a young actor who has gone on to shine since this was released. In The Edge of Seventeen, she plays Krista, Nadine's best friend. 2016 also saw her have a great role in Split and she followed it up with a lead part in Five Feet Apart in 2019.

Woody Harrelson - True Detective

Woody Harrelson is one of the most prolific actors in all of Hollywood. His acting credits date back to the '70s and he has been nominated for multiple Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmy Awards throughout his career. In The Edge of Seventeen, he plays Max Bruner, Nadine's teacher who she bonds with.

Picking just one movie or TV show for Harrelson is difficult. There's The People vs. Larry FlyntZombielandThe Hunger GamesWhite Men Can't JumpCheersNatural Born Killers, and that's barely scratching the surface. However, his best work is arguably HBO's True Detective. He was one of the two leads in the critically-acclaimed first season alongside Matthew McConaughey.
