As mentioned with our posting of the first trailer, Edge of Darkness was written by William Monahan (The Departed) and Andrew Bovell (Dogwoman: The Legend of Dogwoman). Like The Departed, this film involves those sworn to protect and serve the city of Boston. It's based on the eponymous BBC series, also directed by Campbell.
Gibson plays a detective who stumbles into a big-time conspiracy while investigating the death of his own daughter. Ray Winstone (The Departed, Sexy Beast), Danny Huston (Children of Men), Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me to Hell) and Shawn Roberts (Jumper) join Gibson in the cast. Campbell is no stranger to action flicks, having previously helmed GoldenEye, Casino Royale and The Legend of Zorro. Now, here's what you came for (there's a lil' ad to start, but several minutes of clips after):
A lot of actors fall into the trap of going over the top to show the audience how much they loved the one they lost - how angry they are, how badly they want justice, etc. However, Mel seems to have found a way to be full of emotion and intent without coming off melodramatic. I was entertained. I always like to see quiet moments in action thrillers and the actors here all do a good job of filling them.
Gibson seems to have gotten a good hold on the Boston accent as well. He's once again showing off the talent that's recently been overshadowed by his personal life. Here's hoping the rest of the film is as subtly intense as what these clips offer.
Edge of Darkness sweeps into theaters January 29th.
