Last Night in Soho is the latest work of Edgar Wright, but what’s next for him now that the movie is out? Edgar Wright has become one of the most popular filmmakers in the industry thanks to his very peculiar style to tell fun stories. Wright’s work has become notable for his visual narrative, defined by fast cuts, Steadicam tracking shots, dolly zooms, whip pan transitions and more, as well as for the generous dose of humor that he adds to each one of his stories.

Edgar Wright has mostly worked on comedies (such as the Cornetto Trilogy, formed by Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End) and explored the action genre with Baby Driver, and now he brought something entirely different with Last Night in Soho. Starring Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Matt Smith, Last Night in Soho is a psychological horror movie written by Wright and Krysty Wilson Cairns. It follows Eloise “Ellie” (McKenzie), a young woman who arrives in London to study fashion design, but at night, she finds herself transported back to 1966 London. However, Ellie isn’t herself in this setting, and she lives through the body of Sandie (Taylor-Joy), an iconic nightclub singer of the era. While in Sandie’s body, Ellie begins a romantic relationship with Jack (Smith), but she soon realizes that Sandie’s life is far from glamorous, and past and present begin to fall apart.

Last Night in Soho was announced as Wright’s next project in 2019, and after being delayed a couple of times due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was granted a theatrical release for October 29, 2021. Given Edgar Wright’s popularity and how well Last Night in Soho has been received so far, all eyes are on Wright’s future projects, and luckily, he already has a couple of movies lined up for the near future – the trick is which one will be next. Projects like the animated movie Shadows have been in development for years, but there are others that could see the light soon, such as an adaptation of Simon Stephenson’s book Set My Heart To Five.

Wright has another book adaptation on his list of future projects thanks to Adrian McKinty’s horror novel The Chain. Further adding to that list is the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man, which will also serve as a remake of the 1987 movie version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Other projects Wright has been attached to are adaptations of the books Grasshopper Jungle and Fortunately, the Milk, along with an adaptation of the TV series The Night Stalker and a sequel to Baby Driver. However, out of all these projects, the one that seems most likely to become Wright’s next movie after Last Night in Soho is The Running Man, which already has Michael Bacall on board as screenwriter and is the only project listed in Wright’s filmography in most websites.

Of course, it’s possible that Wright will take another project – whether an adaptation or another original story – that will push The Running Man and the rest back for a while, but only time will tell. What’s for sure is that there will be more of Edgar Wright’s creativity on the big screen for years to come, and for now, viewers can enjoy his take on psychological horror with Last Night in Soho.
