There still isn't much known about the film's plot, but Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho might just end up being 2020's best horror movie. 2020 has already seen several theatrical horror movies arrive, and we're barely a month in. Needless to say, there's still plenty of interesting horror titles yet to grace screens before 2020 is over, even if January's somewhat lackluster output has led some fans to cry foul and worry about what's to come.

Before the clock strikes midnight on January 1, 2021, horror fans will have borne witness to Halloween Kills, a new Saw film starring Chris Rock, A Quiet Place Part 2, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, and much more. There are lots of great frights to look forward to in 2020, and among them is Last Night in Soho, a psychological horror/thriller set to be directed, co-produced, and co-written by celebrated filmmaker Edgar Wright, helmer of such hits as Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver.

Last Night in Soho Could Be 2020's Best Horror Movie

Thomasin McKenzie in Last Night in Soho

Set to be released in theaters this September, Last Night in Soho already has a lot going for it, even with plot details scarce. For one, Edgar Wright is writing and directing it, and his filmography boasts one of the best ratios of hit to miss out there. Some would argue he's actually never directed a truly bad film. Wright also made clear his love for the horror genre in Shaun of the Dead. Then there's the fact that Last Night in Soho is a psychological horror story that Wright says takes its cues from creepy 1970s classics like Don't Look Now and Repulsion. Wright has also confirmed the presence of time travel in the plot, which is something rarely combined with horror, and presents many new creative opportunities.

Then there's another strength of Last Night in Soho, its cast. Fronting the film are young actresses Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy, the latter pictured above in the one official photo from the film so far. McKenzie first wowed audiences in Leave No Trace, and also recently starred in Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit. Taylor-Joy already has horror hits The Witch and Split on her resume, and will this year also appear in X-Men horror movie The New Mutants. Add to that former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, and veteran British thespians Diana Rigg and Terrence Stamp, and that's a lot of acting fire power on display in Last Night in Soho. Finally, in the last several years, the best horror movies have almost always ended up being the most complex and unsettling, and not the ones full of cheap jump scares and startling shocks. By all accounts, the former kind of film is what Wright wants to deliver.
