Wright explains he's a true fan of the character and his history, having owned and fallen in love with his origin story from an early 60s issue of 'Tales to Astonish.' Wright was then asked about the real difficulty in selling such a character as this, one who shrinks and controls ants as his power.
"I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent."
"Even something like The Incredible Shrinking Man, which is a fantastic film, is about a guy in trouble. But this is going to be nothing like that. It’s essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power."
A "high-tech spy heist" is certainly something that will help Ant-Man differentiate himself from the other comic book movies that have been released or are in development and that also gives us an idea of what role he can have as part of The Avengers roster, should he play a part in potential sequels. With the comedic twist Wright will add and hopefully a lovable star in the lead role, Ant-Man could offer a needed box office success after Scott Pilgrim's underwhelming first-week financial performance.
