John Cena has opened up about his role as Peacemaker in James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad and the hero's eponymous HBO Max spin-off series, describing him as an f-ed up superhero. Gunn's standalone sequel will see Peacemaker as part of the titular team of villains sent to the fictional South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy the Nazi-era prison and laboratory Jotunheim. Cena will star in the film alongside returning Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman. Plus, newcomers Idris Elba, Sylvester Stallone, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, and Michael Rooker.

The character of Peacemaker was created by writer Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette and made his comic debut with the Christopher Smith incarnation in Fightin' 5 in November 1966. Gunn's film will see the character introduced on the big screen for the first time alongside Bloodsport, King Shark, The Thinker, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, T.D.K., Weasel, Javelin, and Mongal. Following The Suicide Squad, which will finally hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6, Cena will reprise the role in the HBO Max series Peacemaker in January 2022, which will explore the origins of the character.

During the recent WarnerMedia upfront, the 44-year old star opened up about his thoughts on the character and his motivations in the mission. Describing his love for patriotism and a world of order, Cena noted the  f***ed up nature behind what he'll do to achieve it. Read what Cena had to say below:

“He loves peace so much he’ll kill for it. That one sentence, right there is so... F**ked.”

Ever since the first trailer arrived for Gunn's star-studded action-comedy, it's been pretty evident to fans that Cena's Peacemaker has a few screws loose in the head. From a willingness to eat a beach full of male genitalia for peace to a lack of concern for Harley Quinn's well-being during a rescue mission, there's been a lot shown for fans to both love and hate the character. But no matter what side of the line one is on in that respect, it's undoubtedly clear thus far that Peacemaker is a truly f***ed up person.

That being said, if you look at the company he's forced to keep in The Suicide Squad, it certainly doesn't point towards him being the most out-of-place or detestable character audiences will see when the film hits theaters. Plus, given his almost antihero nature, Gunn's prequel series could give viewers a better insight into why he's driven to the degree that he is to find peace. Viewers won't have to wait long to see his debut either way when the film hits theaters and HBO Max in a few months.
