The Dynasty Warriors movie trailer is packed with all the giant armies, ridiculous attacks, and heavy metal guitar music the video games are famous for. The film adaptation was originally intended for a 2019 premiere, but a series of delays pushed it to a planned Chinese release on April 30, 2021. Dynasty Warriors stars Louis Koo as Lu Bu, Wang Kai as Cao Cao, Tony Yang as Liu Bei, and Han Geng as Guan Yu, and is directed by Nightfall’s Roy Hin Yeung Chow.

Developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo, the Dynasty Warriors video games are loosely based on the 14th-century Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is based on the 3rd-century historical text Record of the Three Kingdoms. The story, set in 2nd and 3rd-century China during the final years of the Han Dynasty, focuses on the various wars between feudal lords at the time. Dynasty Warriors embellishes the core historical characters and events with hyper-stylized action, magic, and hard-rockin' soundtrack. The franchise is one of Koei Tecmo’s most successful internationally.

New trailer footage for the Dynasty Warriors movie shared on Twitter by Daniel Ahmad proves that the film adaptation will be just as chaotic and absurd as the games. The cast is seen, among other things, throwing fireballs, creating earthquakes, blasting windstorms from their swords, riding horses on water, and flying. It’s a ludicrous and entertaining glimpse at the movie to come, which may be more faithful to the source material than any video game movie to date.

Despite decades of disappointments, the field of video game movie and TV adaptations seems to be moving in the right direction finally. Recent releases like Sonic the Hedgehog, Detective Pikachu, and Netflix’s Castlevania series have set a strong precedent, which will hopefully be continued by upcoming adaptations like The Last of Us, Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, Assassin’s Creed, and Resident Evil. With luck, Dynasty Warriors will help keep pushing the genre in the right direction as well.

Unfortunately for U.S.-based fans of the series, no official plans for an American release have been announced. That’s not uncommon, of course, for Hong Kong blockbusters, but it does mean North American viewers may have to wait a bit longer to see the movie for themselves. When it does come over, though, it looks like it will bring all the wild style that’s made the franchise famous. Dynasty Warriors is scheduled to release in China on April 30.
