Just in time for Halloween, Techland is resurrecting its popular Dying Light/Left 4 Dead 2 crossover, even if only for a little while. There's been very little news surrounding the Dying Light series in recent weeks, ever since the planned sequel Dying Light 2 was indefinitely postponed back in January (although Techland insists progress is moving along). However, players of the first installment have been able to enjoy a constant stream of DLC, including the most recent Hellraid expansion back in August.
While the Left 4 Dead series has long since kicked the bucket with the confirmed cancellation of Left 4 Dead 3, its cabal of devoted fans have managed to keep the undead series walking, with the fan-produced (in tandem with Valve) The Last Stand DLC amassing well over 60,000 players upon its release. The success of the DLC for a game that came out over 11 years ago is proof the franchise is just as popular as ever. Techland was clearly more than happy to snatch up an opportunity when it saw it, and the success of last year's event meant bringing it back this year was a no-brainer.
This week, Dying Light released a trailer for the Left 4 Dead 2 crossover, which teases an exciting opportunity for fans. Unfortunately, the event is only slated to last until October 29 at 7:00 p.m. CET. It's also only available on PC, though console players can snatch up the DLC in a few weeks.
The trailer makes it clear Dying Light's crossover event is a fitting tribute to the zombie game series that inspired it. The crossover will give players the chance to step into the raggedy boots of curmudgeonly Valve fan favorite William "Bill" Overbeck to fight against hordes of Virals in the event's "Viral Rush" mode. Veterans of Left 4 Dead 2 will recognize the addition of incendiary ammo for a little extra fire and brimstone. However, real Valve nerds will likely pay more attention to meme-fodder Gnome Chompski from Half-Life 2 taking his rightful place as a two-handed melee weapon designed to shred Virals to bits. Luckily, if fighting swarm after swarm of Virals starts to get too difficult, the Viral Rush mode can be turned off, which some players may be excited to hear.
Even if Dying Light 2 isn't on the horizon any time soon, the event and subsequent DLC should provide a nice distraction for players as they wait, just as the rest of the DLC has been doing. Since there's only a small window of time in which users can enjoy the crossover event, it makes sense to check it out sooner rather than later.
