After a long time out of the spotlight, Dying Light 2 Stay Human (as the game is now known), has gotten its first gameplay trailer in two years, as well as an official release date. The eight-minute Dying Light 2 trailer reveals plenty of information about the game's rich world, new characters, story, and of course, shows off a variety of ways to take care of undead and living threats. It's looking like a rather bold and ambitious follow-up to the first entry should its December 7 launch go smoothly.

As fate would have it, Dying Light 2's release date leaked earlier Thursday ahead of developer Techland's planned stream, revealing the game will be releasing at the tail end of 2021. The game has been in development for quite a while, leaving fans waiting for a sequel for over five years. Although there's been plenty of content added to the first game since it launched in 2015, many have been wondering when the much larger Dying Light 2 will release and now, after prolonged silence, there's an official answer.

As revealed during Techland's first Dying 2 Know stream, Dying Light 2 will release on December 7, 2021 with a variety of special editions to compliment it, featuring things like a statue and extra bonus content. To celebrate the game's rather imminent release, Techland also dropped eight minutes of gameplay that was captured in-game, meaning it should look pretty close to how the final version of the game plays. The massive world of Dying Light 2 is set about 20 years after the first game after humanity lost a war with the Harran Virus, leaving three factions to fight over resources in the modern dark ages. Needless to say, there will be a lot of people to help, but also a lot of people to tick off, and there are just as many ways to kill human foes are there are infected ones.

It looks like Dying Light 2 could easily be a potential Game of the Year candidate should it live up to all of its potential, as it looks to be incredibly well-realized and fleshed out. The success of the first game has clearly allowed Techland to go wild and make something quite grand, it just remains to be seen if the developer can stick the landing. However, its long and somewhat problematic development has likely made some wary about how the game will actually play when it releases.

Although Dying Light 2 has had a troubled development according to reports, it looks like Techland may have pulled it together in the final stretch of development. Of course, this could still end up being a Cyberpunk 2077 situation at launch, but hopefully the developer learned from CD Projekt Red's lessons and is willing to delay Dying Light 2 if needed.
