Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is Getting His Very Own Musical in London

WWE wrestler-turned-movie star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is the subject of a musical playing next week in London. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is without question one of the biggest stars in the world, a status he began building toward with his popularity as a WWE star. After making the leap to movies, it didn't take Johnson long to chord with audiences, and before too long he completed his full-fledged transformation as an actor.

Kicking off his big screen career with a supporting role as the Scorpion King in 2001's The Mummy Returns and getting his own Scorpion King movie a year later, Johnson charged headlong into a career that hit its stride after joining the Fast and Furious franchise with Fast Five. Currently, he's starring worldwide smash Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, has the action adventure Rampage on deck, and is all but guaranteed another global hit with a Fast and Furious spinoff opposite Jason Statham in 2019. Johnson is so popular, in fact, that he's even flirted with a run for the U.S. presidency.

Now, thanks to one U.K. fan's obsession with Johnson, fans in London are about to be treated with a stage musical about the film and television star. According to Metro U.K., the all-female writers group Nevertheless She is producing The People's Rock: A Musical, which will stage at the Network Theater during the Vault Festival – billed as London's Biggest Arts Festival – from January 24-28. Set in a dystopian future, the musical presents a "teenage fantasy/religious role model hybrid of The Rock, as a bleak world attempts to curb momentary hope." Johnson isn't taking part in the play, so in his stead, the character is played by a puppet, a la the Broadway smash Avenue Q. The rest of musical features live actors.

In an interview with Metro U.K., Nevertheless She producer Emma Shaw says the idea was spurred by one of the theater company's friends, who is obsessed with Johnson. Teasing her for things like her cardboard cut-outs of the actor, the light bulb for an idea eventually lit up and grew into a 60-minute play with 10 songs. Even though the character is obviously Johnson, Shaw says in the musical he is known as "The Fairy Rock Mother." The production takes cue from real-life politics, Shaw says, as The Rock character is seen as a cult figure and considered the People's Champion, the only beacon of hope in "a very drab world where everyone is controlled by Emperor Trumpus."

While Johnson was willing to take on Broadway-like tunes doing the voice of Maui in Disney's animated blockbuster Moana, Shaw says his character might actually be more of a reflection of the theatricality of his home before movies, with the WWE. She says:

WWE is theatre in its purest form! Wrestling has the narratives that go through it and they have storylines. If you go to the Globe (Theatre in London) on a good night, that is very much like WWE.

It will be interesting to see how much attention The People's Rock: A Musical attracts in its four-day run in London next week, and whether that turns into something more, whether in London's West End or even Broadway. Given Johnson's luminescent personality and obvious love of performing, the musical about The Rock could get boulder-like momentum if it somehow attracts the performer's attention.
