Dwayne Johnson has confirmed he and The Fate of the Furious costar Vin Diesel didn't shoot any scenes together for the sequel. Johnson made his debut in the franchise with Fast Five, playing a relentless federal agent named Hobbs who was tasked with hunting down Dom's crew. Hobbs added some much needed fresh blood to the franchise, and the character would go on to play an important role in the following three sequels.
While filming The Fate of the Furious, Johnson took to his Instagram account to complain about an unnamed costar, labelling them a 'candyass' for their onset conduct. It didn't take long to learn said candyass belonged to Vin Diesel, and the feud between them was genuine. Diesel – who also acts as producer on the series – also nixed a post-credit scene from the movie that set up a potential spinoff featuring Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. That spinoff has since been confirmed and will hit theaters before the next Fast & Furious movie.

Hobbs and Diesel's character Dom only share a handful of scenes in The Fate of the Furious, which seemed to be shot in such a way that neither star needed to be on set at the same time. Johnson spoke about his feud with his co-star in a new Rolling Stone profile and confirmed they didn't actually shoot together for the movie, stating "That is correct. We were not in any scenes together":
Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer. And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I'm grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.
Johnson went on to say he was committed to making the upcoming spinoff the best it could be, but he doesn't know if Hobbs will return for Fast & Furious 9:
I'm not quite sure. Right now I'm concentrating on making the spinoff as good as it can be. But I wish him all the best, and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have.
On the last point, the actor added with a laugh "Actually, you can erase that last part about 'no ill will.' We'll just keep it with the clarity." It appears that whatever tensions flared up between the two while filming the movie haven't gone away, and there's a chance they may never work together again. Costar Tyrese Gibson made headlines last year calling out Johnson, first publicly pleading with him not to make the Hobbs spinoff - and thus delay Fast & Furious 9 - and then threatening to quit the franchise if Johnson returned. The actor has since declared the feud over.
For the moment, Johnson is pressing ahead with the Hobbs/Shaw spinoff. Johnson and Statham shared great chemistry in The Fate Of The Furious, so fans are excited about a pairing between the two action stars. Fast & Furious 9 is slated for a 2020 release, and the main series is then set to conclude with Fast & Furious 10.
