Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appears to be on a serious mission to shrug off his kid-friendly Tooth Fairy wings in favor of some hardcore action boots.
In addition to the recent announcement that Johnson would be replacing Clive Owen in the Simon West film Protection, we are now hearing word that the former WWE star could be considered for a role in the next Fast and the Furious installment - 2 Fast 2 Furious, I mean Fast Five.
According to Deadline New York, Johnson's role would be a starring role - placing him at the center of the film's "heroes on the run" plot.
There aren't too many details about Fast Five as of yet - aside from the fact the plot follows "fugitives Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) who are pursued by lawmen."
Sounds like returning director, Justin Lin, is looking to inject some serious star-power in his "lawmen" lineup.
Deadline reports, at this point, nothing is set in stone but Johnson seems drawn to fast-paced action these days - he'll also be starring in the upcoming film Faster (another "hero on the run" action flick).
Fast and Furious may have reenergized the series but it's still difficult to imagine how much gas the franchise has left in the tank. However, adding Johnson into the mix will certainly give Fast Five a solid jolt of nitrous - not to mention, keep the actor on the action-thriller road that suits him best.
That said, I don't mean to sound as though I think Johnson is merely a one-note action junkie - because that spot is reserved for Vin Diesel.
Johnson actually has some versatility but I think it's a mistake for him to do too many kid-friendly films or indie projects at a time - not without giving fans a taste of his hard-hitting action roots.
Is Johnson enough to get audiences back into driver... I mean theatre seats?
Fast Five is scheduled for a June 10, 2011 release in theatres.
