Duolingo Max is a new Duolingo subscription plan that brings two AI features based on the GPT-4 platform. OpenAI – the creators of the infamous ChatGPT model – recently launched GPT-4. The new version can handle even more complex tasks and claims to be more factually accurate. Meanwhile, ChatGPT is now being used by a slew of apps, including Snapchat, Grammarly, and Slack. Even the microblogging platform Koo has made it easier for people to draft posts using AI integration.
Duolingo is no stranger to using AI tools to help users learn new languages. The new Duolingo Max subscription tier offers everything users get with a Super Duolingo subscription, with the addition of two new features powered by GPT-4 – Explain My Answer and Roleplay. Users in the U.S., Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will be the first to gain access to Max when it goes live, with other countries to be added later. Duolingo Max’s new features are only available in Spanish and French for English speakers on iOS at the moment. The subscription costs $30 per month or $168 per year.
Explain My Answer And Roleplay
So how exactly do the new GPT-4 features work? Explain My Answer wants to help learners better understand their answers, whether they're right or wrong. It's common for users to make mistakes while learning a new language, but it's not always easy to understand what the mistake is or how to correct it. With Duolingo Max, subscribers can tap the 'Explain My Answer' button after completing certain exercises to begin a chat with Duo – the app’s mascot. Users can then get an explanation about why their answer was right or wrong, and even request further explanations or examples, if required.
Roleplay, on the other hand, lets subscribers have conversations with "world characters in the app.” Learners get to speak with an AI chatbot trained to act like a human being. They can gain XP in the process too. Duolingo says the AI is highly interactive and can have numerous discussions, each one unique. With Roleplay, users can have conversations with the app's characters, such as discussing an upcoming vacation or ordering a coffee at a café in Paris. After the conversation is over, Duo will review the user's responses and give them tips on how to improve.
Integrating GPT-4 into Duolingo will provide more human-like language coaching for subscribers. However, AI isn't perfect, which means mistakes can be made. Duolingo claims that its team will constantly review the AI responses for Roleplay and Explain My Answer to ensure they're factually correct. If users spot a mistake by the AI, they can notify Duolingo by long-pressing the inaccurate message and selecting a reason for why it's being reported.
