Wizards of the Coast has announced Fizban's Treasury of Dragons for Dungeons & Dragons, which is an upcoming book that details the lore of dragonkind. Dragons are some of the most feared foes in D&D, yet most players only see them as a selection of numbers and attacks.

The dragons in D&D are powerful creatures, yet they rarely take part in the comings and goings of everyday life. If dragons banded together, then they could subjugate entire nations with their power. Luckily for the humanoid races, the dragons of the world are extremely territorial and seem more focused on acquiring food and treasure than becoming kings. There are a few exceptions to this, such as Borys of Athas from Dark Sun, who brought an entire world to heel, but most dragons are content to stay in their lairs until a foolish party decides to challenge them.

D&D players will have a chance to learn more about dragons, as well as utilizing draconic options for their characters, when Fizban's Treasury of Dragons launches on October 19, 2021. Fizban's Treasury of Dragons explains the expansive lore of dragons, such as how their hoards are linked to their power. The gem dragons from older versions of D&D are being introduced in fifth edition for the first time in this book. Gem dragons are tied to supernatural elements beyond that of the Material Plane, such as psychic powers. There are also gem versions of the dragonborn, which were featured in an Unearthed Arcana article on the past.

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Great Wyrm Dungeons & Dragons

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons will also add new character options for players, including draconic subclasses for monks and rangers, along with new feats and spells. The DMs of the world won't be left out either, as there will be information about dragon-themed Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, as well as details regarding 20 different kinds of dragons. Among these are the Great Wyrms, which are mythic-level D&D monsters that gain power from different dragons across the multiverse.

The POV character for the book is Fizban, who D&D fans might recognize as a character from the Dragonlance campaign setting. Fizban is a doddering old wizard, who is known for forgetting his spells. It's revealed that Fizban is actually an avatar of Paladine, which is the aspect of Bahamut on the world of Krynn. Fizban is an excellent choice for a POV character for the book, as he's a human aspect of the god of dragons. This is also the first time that a POV character from Dragonlance has been chosen for a fifth edition book, suggesting that it could be one of the promised returning classic Dungeons & Dragons settings. It's possible that Fizban's appearance could be testing the waters for more Dragonlance content to come.
