Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein tease that the upcoming movie is for players of the game and the uninitiated alike. Based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves tells the story of a team of misfits who embark on a legendary quest to retrieve a lost relic. The movie stars Chris Pratt, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Sophia Lillis, and Justice Smith.

Although the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer has already revealed a host of Easter eggs and references to the games, Daley and Goldstein tease in a recent interview with IGN that there's also plenty for those who are completely unfamiliar with the source material. Of the film, Daley says it represented a “great opportunity to capture the spirit of playing a campaign without at all alienating people who are not privy to the game or the mechanics of the game.” Check out Goldstein's additional comment below:

“People will be surprised by what the movie is because people come to a film like this with expectations of what a fantasy adventure movie is. And some of that is here, but there's also a lot that will surprise them.”

What To Expect From Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Chris Pine in Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves-1

The trailers for the movie have made it very clear that Daley and Goldstein are big fans of the tabletop game, featuring a host of iconic monsters and locations from the game's lore. A mimic, an owlbear, a displacer beast, and a gelatinous cube, are among the monsters expected to be included in Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. In terms of classic locations, audiences can expect to see Neverwinter, Waterdeep, Icewind Dale, and The Underdark at various points throughout the movie.

A number of character classes from the games will also be featuring prominently in the movie, with Pine's character a Bard, Rodriguez's a Barbarian, Page's a Paladin, Smith a Sorcerer, Lillis a Druid, and Grant a Rogue. These characters' personalities have already been shown off in the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer, with Pine's character, Edgin, using his charm to influence others while Rodriguez's Holga will be quick to take up arms against threats. Lillis' Doric also features prominently in the trailer, with her Tiefling abilities taking center stage during several scenes.

Despite this clear adherence to the source material, Daley and Goldstein's comments would suggest that Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will have plenty for those interested in the fantasy movie genre more broadly. In addition to heaps of action and fantastical creatures, the movie also features an impressive cast that is sure to draw in those unfamiliar with the game. Thankfully, those excited for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves don't have too much longer to wait, with the movie set to hit theaters in just over a month.
