Several classic monsters will get the movie treatment in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The first full trailer for Paramount’s big-screen D&D adventure provided previews of five of the creatures featured in the story. Four appear to be obstacles for the main characters to overcome on their journey.

The release of the highly-anticipated Honor Among Thieves trailer sets up a live-action Dungeons & Dragons campaign centered on its very own party of ragtag heroes. The footage in the trailer promises an in-depth adaption of the Dungeons & Dragons world, complete with the various regions, classes, magic spells, races, and monsters tied to the brand. Through its introduction of the five main characters, Honor Among Thieves provided a glimpse into its take on bards, paladins, barbarians, and more. Based on what was shown, the upcoming 2023 movie will be packed with recognizable elements and concepts from the popular tabletop game.

The scope of the Dungeons & Dragons world and all that it encompasses means that there’s only so much from the game that Honor Among Thieves can incorporate into the story, which has created numerous questions about what exactly it’ll use and what will be overlooked. Thanks to the trailer, audiences at least now have an idea of what monsters will show up, though more will be naturally be revealed later as the movie draws closer to its release date. Here’s every Dungeons & Dragons monster confirmed for Honor Among Thieves so far and what they can do.

Dragons

Three different dragons were spotted in the Honor Among Thieves trailer. Given that the legendary beast is in the title and is often positioned as the final challenge for so many D&D campaigns, it’s hardly a surprise that the Dungeons & Dragons movie will be making heavy use of them. Most are depicted as evil, egotistical beings who view themselves as superior to elves, humans, and all the other races. However, some dragons do have the potential for benevolence, but even they are prone to arrogant behavior. As for which kinds of dragons the movie will draw upon, it appears Honor Among Thieves will use the acid-spitting black dragon, the fire-breathing red dragon, and the white dragon. The latter’s breath attack wasn’t shown in the trailer, but D&D’s white dragons have ice powers.

Mimic

The mimic, one of the most unusual monsters in the Dungeons & Dragons world, is a mischievous creature that uses its shapeshifting abilities to lay traps for unsuspecting travelers. Preying on adventurers’ lust for riches, mimics typically morph themselves into treasure chests and wait for the opportunity to feast. In D&D campaigns, they’re often used to bait and then blindside players. Looking at the trailer, the main characters will experience a similar situation in Honor Among Thieves. Michelle Rodriguez’s barbarian hero was seen dealing with a mimic in the footage.

Owlbear

In Dungeons & Dragons, druids are capable of using their nature magic to take the form of animals and certain monsters. The trailer confirms that the group’s druid, played by Sophie Lillis, will use the owlbear as her transformation of choice. As its name implies, the owlbear is a powerful, owl-faced monster with a bear-like body. D&D’s cave-dwelling owlbears make for incredibly challenging encounters, which is why having one on the side of Honor Among Thieves' characters will be good for their chances.

Displacer Beast

D&D Feywild Displacer Beast

The creature that attacked the party at the 1:46 mark was a displacer beast. Resembling a black panther, the displacer beast is a mystical, six-legged monster with tentacles extending from its body. Known for their ability to deceive opponents by appearing closer – or further away – from where they actually are, displacer beasts can create confusing situations for their enemies. These evil, carnivorous killers have a tendency to pursue their victims for sport and would often torture their opponents before completing the kill.

Gelatinous Cube

In the same instant the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer unveiled the displacer beast, the movie teased its interpretation of a different monster. To escape the displacer beast, the characters unintentionally put themselves into the crosshairs of a new enemy when they dove into the gelatinous cube, a monster composed entirely of ooze. In the game, a gelatinous cube is a creature that traps people within its walls and then allows its acidic ooze to slowly dissolves their bodies. If its victim doesn’t immediately escape, it’ll be digested by the cube, which will leave nothing behind but bones, clothing, and armor. All organic matter will be consumed by the monster.
