Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a reboot of the movie franchise based on the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, features a colorful group of characters played by an all-star cast. In the iconic RPG, players develop their own medieval fantasy characters and role-play as them through a high-fantasy adventure, a quest developed and delivered by another player called the Dungeon Master. The game uses luck, skill, and a significant amount of imagination and can be incredibly rewarding and fun to play. The Honor Among Thieves cast play a party of characters who could have been written up in any Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and the charm and fun they bring to the roles is what makes the movie so watchable (even to those who aren't fans of tabletop role-playing games).

The 2023 Dungeons & Dragons movie takes place in the magical world described in the RPG, following a party of thieves who commit petty crimes after a tragic event. Backstabbings, magical items, and heroic deeds ensue, and the tropes of Dungeons & Dragons come to life on screen in a way that satisfies longtime fans and intrigues newcomers. The characters in the adaptation represent staple figures from the game, and the cast picked to play them consists of a mix of recognizable and newer talents. Here's a guide to each Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves character, who plays them, and what else the actor is known for.

Chris Pine As Edgin Darvis

Chris Pine in Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves.

Chris Pine leads the Dungeons & Dragons cast as Edgin the Bard. The character is on a quest to rescue his daughter and resurrect his wife. Edgin is a clever, funny, and mischievous leader who tries to think and talk his way out of situations rather than fight. Charisma is an important characteristic for bards, and Pine has that in spades. The actor is no stranger to franchise storytelling, leading the cast of the Star Trek reboot movies as Captain James T. Kirk and co-starring in the DCEU's Wonder Woman films. He's capable of comedy and drama and is an excellent lead for a role requiring both.

Michelle Rodriguez As Holga Kilgore

Character types in Dungeons & Dragons are referred to as classes, and Holga Kilgore is part of the barbarian class. It’s a type known for its physical combat abilities and no-nonsense attitudes. There aren’t many better choices for Holga in the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves cast than Michelle Rodriguez, an actor who has made a name for herself as a go-to action star. Moviegoers know Rodriguez best as Letty Ortiz in the Fast & Furious franchise, and she also played similarly tough and sarcastic characters in Avatar and Machete. Holga is the muscle in the Dungeons & Dragons cast and a surrogate mother to Kira, allowing Rodriguez to show more emotional range than usual.

Hugh Grant As Forge Fitzwilliam

Hugh Grant in Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves

The main villain of the Dungeons & Dragons cast is Forge Fitzwilliam, a rogue played by Hugh Grant. As the character's class implies, Forge is a con man who turns on Edgin and his party early in the movie. He abducts Kira and becomes the ruler of the kingdom. Grant has played this type of devious villain before, in Paddington 2, but he’s better known for his romantic lead roles in the Bridget Jones series and Four Weddings and a Funeral. His dashing leading man looks combined with a smarmy sense of humor works well for a character literally defined by having roguish charm.

Regé-Jean Page As Xenk Yendar

Regé-Jean Page as Xenk the Paladin Honor Among Thieves

Regé-Jean Page plays one of the signature character classes of Dungeons & Dragons: the paladin. His Xenk Yendar is a warrior who agrees to help Edgin and his party on their quest to save Kira in the Dungeons & Dragons cast. Unlike the rest of the party’s members, Xenk has no sense of humor, and his constant seriousness and stoniness in the face of the zany antics of the others in the group lead to many funny moments. Known for his role as Simon Basset in Netflix’s Bridgerton, Page has experience playing a courtly gentleman, which is fitting for a paladin. Page also appeared in The Gray Man.

Justice Smith As Simon Aumar

Simon Aumar is the requisite sorcerer of the party. Played by Justice Smith in the Dungeons & Dragons cast, Simon is part of the original crew of thieves at the beginning of the movie when Forge is still an ally. After they are betrayed and the group goes their separate ways, Simon returns to help Edgin and Holga in their quest. Smith plays Franklin Webb in the second and third Jurassic World movies and starred in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu as Tim Goodman. Smith has a twitchy, nervous sort of personality that works well for Simon, a sorcerer who is still not competent with all forms of magic.

Sophia Lillis As Doric

Doric is a tiefling druid who joins the party in the Dungeons & Dragons cast. Tieflings are a humanoid race of creatures with tails and horns, and as a druid, Doric has nature-themed magical powers and the ability to shape-shift. Doric is played by Sophia Lillis, best known for her breakthrough role as Beverly Marsh in It and It: Chapter 2. She also starred in the Netflix original I Am Not Ok with This. As the newest member of the party, Doric is the audience surrogate to experience firsthand how incompetent the group can be, and Lillis plays her as clever in a way that’s always funny, never obnoxious.

Daisy Head As Sofina, The Red Wizard Of Thay

Daisy Head is a television and movie scream queen and a frequent actor in fantasy movies. She has a recurring role in Shadow and Bone on Netflix and has appeared in the Wrong Turn franchise, the Underworld franchise, Ophelia, The Sandman, and many other sci-fi, fantasy, and horror productions. Head again dabbles in fantasy and horror as part of the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves cast in the role of Sofina, The Red Wizard of Thay. Sofina is Dungeons & Dragons cast's secondary antagonist but the most dangerous one as a necromancer and powerful magic user. She’s a frightening villain, and Head gives her a necessary otherworldly creepiness.

Ian Hanmore As Szass Tam

Ian Hanmore as Szass Tam in Dungeons and Dragons cast.

Ian Hanmore starred as Szass Tam, the primary antagonist in the Dungeons & Dragons cast. While Hugh Jackman's Fitzwilliam was the main villain for most of the movie, it was Szass Tam whose followers helped the man rise to power, and then it was time for him to unleash his evil on the world. This was a huge moment because Szass Tam is a Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition villain who made his way from the RPG to the movie. Fans will know Hanmore from his role as the warlock Pyat Pree in Game of Thrones' second season. He also played Master Thorne in two episodes of the Prime Video fantasy series Carnival Row.

The Dungeons & Dragons Animated Series Characters

Dungeons & Dragons 80 cartoon cameos

Not all the characters in the Dungeons & Dragons cast are famous actors. Sometimes, the treat is that they are from a previous D&D property. In this case, it is the cartoon. There is a scene in the movie where the heroes have to make their way through a maze and survive an onslaught of dangerous beasts. There are two other groups that are also fighting for their survival, and one of them is the characters from the 1983 cartoon series — It’s Hank the Ranger, Eric the Cavalier, Presto the Wizard, Bobby the Barbarian, Diana the Acrobat, and Sheila the Thief. They even end up safe in the Cage of Sanctuary and escaped the displacer beast in the movie. The cast for this scene included Edgar Abram (The Northman) as Hank, Trevor Kaneswaran (Clean Sweep) as Eric, Seamus O'Hara (The Northman) as Presto, Luke Bennett as Bobby, Moe Sasegbon (Wonder Woman 1984) as Diana, and Emer McDaid (Game of Thrones) as Sheila.
