One of the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons books is Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, which focuses on dragons and the draconic races, like the dragonborn. One of the most notable aspects of the book for old-school D&D fans is that it stars a character from the Dragonlance setting, suggesting that it could be making a comeback.

There have been several books in the current edition of D&D that feature point-of-view characters, who comment on what's happening in the text. These have come from different campaign settings, with Mordenkainen, Tasha, and Xanathar coming from Greyhawk, Volo coming from the Forgotten Realms, and Van Richten coming from Ravenloft. This isn't unique to the current edition of D&D, as the older ones had books from the POV of characters like Drizzt Do'Urden and Elminster from the Forgotten Realms.

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons marks the first time that a Dragonlance character appears as the POV for a rulebook in the current edition of D&D. It has been confirmed that new Dragonlance novels are on the way and Fizban's Treasury of Dragons could be the start of a revival for the world of Krynn as a D&D campaign setting.

Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that two more classic campaign settings are coming back to D&Dand that they will launch sometime in 2022. During the press event for Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, D&D executive producer Ray Winninger confirmed that Fizban's Treasury of Dragons isn't the setting book for Dragonlance. Fizban was chosen because he's the humanoid aspect of Bahamut, which makes him the ideal candidate to discuss the lore of dragons. Winninger didn't rule Dragonlance out as one of the returning campaign settings, but Fizban's Treasury of Dragons is not it.

Dragonlance feels like a strong contender for one of the returning D&D campaign settings, as there are new novels being written for the world. The writers of the original Dragonlance novels are back on board for the new books, so it's clear that big things will be happening in the setting. Wizards of the Coast has been growing Dungeons & Dragons as a multimedia franchise, and Dragonlance would be an excellent candidate for a movie, TV series, or video game franchise. Fizban's Treasury of Dragons could be the starting point for more Dragonlance content to come, as it proves that Wizards of the Coast hasn't forgotten about the world of Krynn.
