Numerous actors are candidates for the surprise cameo in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. In addition to the movie's confirmed cast, Paramount's live-action Dungeons & Dragons adaptation is expected to feature a well-known actor whose involvement hasn't been announced yet. Honor Among Thieves co-director Jonathan Goldstein previously announced that the movie would feature an appearance from at least one famous D&D player.

In regards to who it will be, no further clues have been offered. Due to the sheer popularity of Dungeons & Dragons, there's a long list of people who fit the extremely vague criteria for Honor Among Thieves' cameo. After all, multiple actors and directors in Hollywood have been vocal about their interest in D&D, with quite few still being active players of the tabletop game today. In light of that, it's not hard to imagine one of them crossing paths with the main party at a certain point in their Dungeons & Dragons adventure. The cameo could be little more than a blink-and-you-missed-it moment, or it could turn out to be a rather substantial part. Here are the actors who might be in the movie, and which one is the best option for the role.

5 Patton Oswalt

Another celebrity D&D player is comedian and actor Patton Oswalt, who has been playing D&D since at least his middle school years. During numerous TV appearances, Oswalt has been open about his love for the tabletop game and has played it in an episode of D&D Live. Having acted in dozens of high-profile TV shows such as King of Queens, Agents of SHIELD, and The Goldbergs, Oswalt would be a solid choice for a cameo in the movie. Based on his history of voiceover work for animated projects, there's a chance he could be brought in to voice one of the monsters in Honor Among Thieves as an alternative to a live-action role. Either way, his comedic chops would enable him to easily mesh with Honor Among Thieves' goofy tone.

4 Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello Arkhan the Cruel Dungeons and Dragons

Joe Manganiello is arguably the most visible Hollywood actor in the Dungeons & Dragons community. Similar to Oswalt and Lillard, the True Blood star isn't shy about his passion for the game. In addition to taking part as a player, he serves a Dungeon Master in weekly D&D campaigns held at his home where he hosts celebrities like Vince Vaughn, Game of Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss, and James Gunn. Joe Manganiello also boasts an impressive collection of Dungeons & Dragons memorabilia surpassed by few. One of his characters, Arkhan the Cruel, was eventually made official D&D canon by Wizards of the Coast.

With Manganiello's physique, it'd be easy to see him as a character in a Dungeons & Dragons adaptation. As for where the actor could fit into Honor Among Thieves' story, he could portray a warrior whom Chris Pine's character and the other adventurers meet on their journey, whether it be on the road or in a tavern. Theoretically, he could even play a live-action version of his own creation by making a cameo as Arkhan the Cruel.

3 Matthew Lillard

Matthew Lillard is best known for playing Shaggy Rogers in James Gunn's Scooby-Doo movies and Stu Macher in Scream. For the past several years, Lillard has been the primary voice of Shaggy in animated Scooby-Doo movies and cartoons. Interestingly, he has strong ties to the Dungeons & Dragons game. Lillard even owns a company called Beadle & Grimm’s Pandemonium Warehouse which is known for selling D&D merchandise. He also participated in Dice, Camera, and Action and Critical Role, two popular D&D livestreams which showcase people playing the tabletop game, sometimes with celebrity guest stars. Given his history with the game, it wouldn't be a shock if Lillard turns out to be the D&D player mentioned by Goldstein.

2 Matthew Mercer

Dungeons and Dragons Matthew Mercer

Matthew Mercer is a prominent video game and TV voice actor whose credits include projects in the Mortal Kombat, Dragon Ball, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, and DC franchises. He admittedly doesn't have the same level of recognition as Manganiello, Lillard, and some of the famous actors who play D&D, but he is well-known by fans and players of Dungeons & Dragons, due in large part to the number of fantasy RPG games he's been involved in. On top of his extensive voiceover work, Mercer is the Dungeon Master of the aforementioned Critical Role web series. Since guest appearances from some Critical Role actors have been confirmed for the film, there's a strong possibility that Mercer will get a cameo, even if he doesn't turn out to be the subject of Goldstein's tease [via Gizmodo].

1 Vin Diesel Is The Best Choice For Honor Among Thieves' Mystery Cameo

Vin Diesel smiles in Fast Five.

As an A-list Hollywood star and a longtime D&D Dungeon Master, Vin Diesel is yet another candidate for the mystery cameo in the movie. And apparently, the prospect of Diesel appearing in the movie has already been brought up to the actor. According to Honor Among Thieves actress Michelle Rodriguez, who worked alongside Diesel in several Fast & Furious movies, she has talked to the star about being in the film. Whether or not he eventually accepted remains to be seen.

In fact, an appearance in the movie wouldn't be the first time Diesel has brought his fondness for D&D to the big screen. In 2015, Vin Diesel starred in a movie titled The Last Witch Hunter in which he played a warrior named Kaulder. According to Diesel himself, Kaulder was based on Melkor, a character he created and played as during a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Since Diesel's image is built on playing "tough guy" characters, it wouldn't be difficult to place him in Honor Among Thieves as a warrior.

What's so exciting about the idea of Vin Diesel being in the movie is that Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms world already has a character that fits him perfectly. Introduced in the Baldur's Gate video game series, Minsc is a human ranger easily recognized by his muscular frame, bald head, and the purple tattoo on his face. In the D&D universe, Minsc is renowned for his unapologetic hatred of all things evil and unique rapport with a hamster named Boo. Convinced that Boo is a Miniature Giant Space Hamster, Minsc considers the rodent an equal partner in his adventures. Diesel is an ideal, physical match for the iconic D&D hero and certainly someone who can easily capture his personality and quirks in the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' comedy.
