Dune is one of the most influential science fiction novels of all time, written by visionary author Frank Herbert. Winner of the Hugo Award and of the inaugural Nebula Award, Dune has spawned a rich universe consisting of a best-selling series of novels, some of which have been written by Frank's son, Brian, and many live-action adaptations, including the 2021 Legendary Pictures movie directed by Denis Villeneuve that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Dune's trademark focus on political intrigue, environmentalism, and the relationship between technology, religion, and economy, has left an everlasting influence on the world of science fiction.

Abrams ComicArts obtained the rights to publish a trilogy of graphic novel adaptations of Herbert’s novel Dune, with the first one released in 2020. BOOM! Studios started publishing a prequel comic book, Dune: House Atreides, in 2020, and has now announced a brand new four-issue series, in partnership with Herbert Properties LLC and in full coordination with Abrams. Dune: The Waters of Kanly is set during the events of the original Dune novel. After the battle of Arrakeen, the death of Duke Leto, and the disappearance of his son Paul and his wife Jessica, the Atreides forces are scattered. The Atreides warmaster Gurney Halleck takes refuge with spice smugglers, vowing to get his revenge against the Harkonnens who destroyed the family he swore to serve. The Waters of Kanly will tell the story of Halleck, who is played by Josh Brolin in the 2021 movie adaptation, before his fateful reunion with Paul Atreides years later.

The series is written by the same team behind Dune: House Atreides, Brian Herbert, who continued his father's work on the Dune franchise after his death, besides authoring his own series of best-selling novels, and Kevin J. Anderson, who has written several novels in the Star Wars, X-Files, and Dune universes. The Waters of Kanly will be illustrated by Francesco Mortarino, colored by Raúl Angulo, and lettered by Ed Dukeshire. The main cover art will be provided by Christian Ward (Something is Killing the Children), with variant covers by Massimo Carnevale (The Marvels, Y: The Last Man), Junggeun Yoon (Magic), and InHyuk Lee (Amazing Spider-man).

BOOM! Studios has been doing a fantastic job in publishing both critically acclaimed original series such as Something is Killing the Children and The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, and popular licensed properties including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and MagicDune is the latest addition to this list, and the Boom!
