A new featurette highlighting the royal houses in Dune features a ton of new footage of the various factions in the upcoming Denis Villeneuve film including the villainous Harkonnen's. Dune will follow House Atreides, spearheaded by Oscar Isaac's Duke Leto, the father to Timothée Chalamet's Paul and husband to Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica. When the galactic emperor asks the Atreides' to take stewardship over the desert planet Arakkis, the Duke has no choice to accept and face the dangerous trap that threatens to destroy everything he's built.
The Atreides will come into conflict with several factions in the film, including the mysterious, all-female religious organization the Bene Gesserit, which Lady Jessica is a member of. Arakkis is also home to the Fremen people, desert dwelling natives who are used to the inhospitable climate of the planet more than anyone else. Lastly, and quite possibly most importantly, is House Harkonnen, the mortal enemies of House Atreides and the former stewards of Arakkis. House Harkonnen is led by Stellan Skarsgård's grotesque Baron Vladimir. David Dastmalchian plays twisted mentat Piter De Vries, while Dave Bautista plays the Baron's sadistic nephew, Glossu Rabban.
A new featurette from Secrets of Dune highlights all of the royal houses and contains a ton of new footage, including new looks at House Harkonnen. The Baron can be seen speaking to both Piter and Chang Chen's Dr. Yeuh in one scene, floating above them ominously. He can also be seen getting ready to take some sort of bath in a pool of what looks to be oil. In another scene, Bautista's Rabban can also be seen threatening to terrorize House Atreides in their new home. Check out the video below:
In addition to the footage of the Harkonnen's, various clips are shown of the Bene Gesserit, the Atreides, and the Fremen. New scenes are also shown of the epic scale of Villeneuve's film, including one in which it seems that the Atreides are on their way to Arakkis through the technique known as "space-folding," a process in which travelers can move through space-time in the blink of an eye. In Villeneuve's film, space-folding is rendered almost like a tunnel and the shot communicates the grand scale of the film as spaceships that look like specks exit the tunnel and approach the planet Arakkis.
As the release date for Dune gets closer, reviews for the film have come out and one thing is clear: Villeneuve has nailed the grand sci-fi world of Herbert's novel. Critics are decidedly more mixed on the story due to the fact that it only adapts half of the novel, but talk of a sequel has continued amid hopes that the director will get the chance to finish the story. Whether or not Dune Part 2 gets the greenlight depends on the film's box office success, but Villeneuve has said he is ready to go at any moment.
