On the same day Denis Villeneuve's Dune departs HBO Max, new details about its Blu-ray release have been revealed. Going into October, there was much interest in seeing how Villeneuve's sci-fi epic would fare. Dune is a notoriously difficult bit of source material to tackle, and the movie's hefty budget cast its financial success in doubt. Additionally, it was unclear if casual audiences would be interested in checking out the cerebral movie, even with an impressive cast attached.
Luckily, Dune managed to surpass all expectations. It was greeted with positive reviews after making its festival debut, and audiences helped propel it to a better than expected box office total in its first weekend. Currently, Dune's worldwide total stands at $367 million, which is a solid number for the pandemic era. The movie also found itself aided by its dual HBO Max release; Warner Bros. was evidently so pleased with Dune's performance, it greenlit Villeneuve's planned second part days after it premiered. Dune: Part 2 is currently scheduled to arrive in late 2023, and it's expected to see the returns of stars like Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.

This is just the beginning for Villeneuve's take on Dune. In addition to the forthcoming sequel, the director has expressed interest in adapting the second book in author Frank Herbert's series. Whether that will ever happen remains to be seen, but if fan enthusiasm for Dune persists over the next few years, audiences can likely expect to see a lot more of Arrakis and the people who populate it.
