Dune behind-the-scenes trailer touts the movie’s practical effects while revealing new footage. Denis Villeneuve’s vision of Frank Herbert’s legendary science fiction novel is already making box office bank internationally, having crossed the $100 million mark before even releasing in North America.

Of course the North American box office will also be crucial to gauging the film's success and, more importantly, determining whether Villeneuve gets to complete his planned trilogy of Dune films. One factor that may work against the movie putting up big domestic numbers is its simultaneous release on streaming platform HBO Max. To mitigate the potential negative box office effects caused by the movie being available at home, everyone involved with Dune is going out of their way to tout the film’s awesome visuals in hopes this will entice audiences to get out of the house and see the film on the big screen.

The movie’s big-screen-worthy visuals are indeed the main focus of a new Dune behind-the-scenes featurette posted by Movieclips Trailers. The video features cast and crew hyping up the hard work that went into making the film while enthusing about director Villeneuve’s commitment to crafting real sets and using practical effects as much as possible. There’s also a sprinkling of concept art and new footage throughout the clip, which can be seen in the space below:

The main takeaway from the clip is that Dune is a very big movie that was made on incredibly impressive sets and people should go see it on the big screen because that’s the only way to truly appreciate its awesome vision. Early reviews have indeed given kudos to the movie’s visuals, but unfortunately some reviews have also knocked it on a storytelling level, downgrading it because it only encompasses half of the first Dune novel and therefore does not tell a complete story.

Of course Villeneuve’s plan was always to adapt Herbert’s Dune over the course of two movies so it should come as no surprise that the first Dune film feels incomplete. International audiences at least don’t seem bothered by the film’s lack of resolution as, again, it’s gone over the $100 million mark in the markets where it’s already been released. The good news as regards Dune’s upcoming North American release is that audiences seem ready to return to theaters, as indicated by the huge numbers Venom: Let There Be Carnage put up in its opening weekend. Of course, Venom is an established comic book movie brand name, which no doubt helped draw people to theaters. Dune is not an established comic book movie brand name but is rather a more niche title that appeals to hard-core sci-fi fans. It remains to be seen whether Dune can break through and attract general audiences, but it’s clear the movie has the visual wow-factor working for it, and those responsible for making it are certainly doing all they can to encourage folks to truly drink in those visuals by eschewing HBO Max and getting out to the multiplex.
