Dune: Part Two will need to carve out an important role for one of the most essential parts of Frank Herbert's world that was left out of Dune. Granted, Dune does have a lot of material to introduce from the Sandworms of Arrakis to House Harkonnen. However, if Dune: Part Two wishes to do justice to the source material, it will have to create a prominent role for the Guild Navigators, who are a central part of the entire Dune universe.

Dune spends a lot of time explaining the Spacing Guild and the importance of the Spice Melange. The Guild Navigators, however, are hardly even mentioned in Dune, and they are not shown at all. The failure to truly introduce the Guild Navigators will have to be corrected in Dune: Part Two as they are an essential part of Paul Atreides' story and to the universe as a whole. The entire process of interstellar travel will need to be further explained and the Guild Navigators are the most fundamental part of interstellar travel.

Why Dune Left Out The Guild Navigators

dune trailer breakdown arrakis from space

Dune had a lot to cover, introducing elements like the Fremen and their desert power to keep the audience interested. So, the most simple explanation for the absence of the Guild Navigators in Dune is that there was not enough time to include them. Dune is forced to walk a fine line between introducing the audience to the wealth of important information in the Dune world and keeping the plot fast-paced enough to be entertaining. The tragedy of the Atreides family is the core of the plot in Dune and as such, it takes up much of the screen time. However, moving forward in Dune: Part Two with Leto Atreides dead and Paul and his mother Jessica living with Dune's Fremen, the sequel needs to take the time needed to properly explain the Spacing Guild and the Guild Navigators' importance therein.

The Guild Navigators Should Be Important To Dune 2's Story

Dune 2 follow up Rendezvous With Rama

The Guild Navigators need to be featured prominently in Dune: Part Two for the importance of Spice to be fully understood by the audience. Guild Navigators are essential because through their extended exposure to Spice, they become super-evolved and gain the ability to chart courses through the stars safely. Without the Guild Navigators there would be no interstellar travel in Dune or Dune: Part Two, an important part of the plot. The new cast members for Dune 2 show no evidence of Guild Navigators, however, that is likely because they will not be played by famous actors, considering their appearance will likely be heavily dependent on CGI.

The role of Guild Navigators in Dune: Part Two could determine whether the movies are able to do justice to Frank Herbert's legendary novels. The movie series simply cannot properly recreate the Dune universe without the Guild Navigators playing an essential role. Though the first movie was incredible, the inclusion of the Navigators is the most important course correction Dune: Part Two needs to make.
