Dune director Denis Villeneuve has responded to the reports that actor Florence Pugh is in talks to star in the upcoming sequel Dune: Part 2Dune is based on the first half of the classic sci-fi novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, which tells the tale of young Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) as he rises to his destiny of becoming the leader of the desert planet of Arrakis. Since its release in October of 2021, the film has gained a huge audience, critical acclaim, and has been nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture of the Year.

Villeneuve has always been a huge fan of the Dune novels and, as such, he wanted to make sure his film was the best adaptation possible, leading him to decide to split the novel into two. However, Warner Bros. only agreed to fund the first half of Dune, waiting to greenlight Dune 2 until they were sure the first film was a success. Luckily for Villeneuve, Dune was a huge success, leading Warner Bros. to almost immediately give the go-ahead for the sequel upon its release. Since Dune: Part 2 was made official, fans have been speculating wildly about how the film will adapt certain elements of the book, and who will play characters who as of yet have not appeared in the film adaptation. Most recently, rumors have been swirling around suggesting that Pugh was in talks to - if not already cast as - Princess Irulan, the Emperor's daughter.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Villeneuve spoke about Dune: Part 2's progress, and the rumors surrounding Pugh's casting. When asked if he could confirm that Pugh would take on the role of Princess Irulan, Villeneuve simply stated "there's been rumors." Of course, the director has not made it clear if the rumors came from his casting, or if he simply has access to the internet, and that is likely exactly how he wants it. Despite this, one could argue that the only reason for Villeneuve to give a non-answer such as this is because there is actually some substance to the rumor.

Pugh's is not the only rumored casting for Part 2. Elvis actor Austin Butler is also rumored to have been cast as the evil Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune 2. While neither casting has been confirmed, both names have been added to the film's IMDb page, which is certainly not quashing any rumors. The casting of a big-name like Pugh as the Princess is interesting, as it may indicate that the role will be expanded for the film. While the Princess is pivotal in the finale of Dune, she does not actually make a physical appearance in the novel until the final chapter. Perhaps Pugh's casting could indicate a more active role in the story.

This is all just speculation of course, as no source can currently confirm either casting and Villeneuve certainly isn't saying anything. However, the shoot for Dune: Partis quickly approaching, which means that the casting will have to be nailed down soon. Fans will want to keep an ear to the ground, as more information is likely coming soon. Until then, Dune fans will likely be looking forward to Oscar night, waiting to see what the film will take home.
