'Due Date' Teaser Trailer

The last time Robert Downey Jr. spoke about his new comedy Due Date, he called it the second greatest movie he'd ever done. That's a pretty tall order from an actor with such an impressive resume so it certainly amped up my interest in the film. He also praised his co-star Zach Galifianakis, director Todd Phillips (The Hangover), and promised that audiences were going to love the film as much as he did.

Now we've got our first glimpse of Due Date thanks to its official teaser trailer debut and you can decide for yourself whether R.D.J. was justifiably excited or raising expectations just a little too high. Given that it's just a teaser, I'm not terribly surprised that they don't do a great job of laying out the film's basic premise so here's the synopsis in case you missed it:

Peter Highman (Downey Jr.) is an expectant first-time father whose wife's due date is a mere five days away. As Peter hurries to catch a flight home from Atlanta to be at her side for the birth, his best intentions go completely awry when a chance encounter with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Galifanakis) forces Peter to hitch a ride with Etha--on what turns out to be a cross-country road trip that will ultimately destroy several cars, numerous friendships and Peter's last nerve.

And here's the teaser trailer for Due Date:

While it's a little underwhelming, I'll admit I laughed pretty hard at the very first joke. I'm not trying to be negative here, either- I'm still totally on board with Due Date for a few reasons. The first is that the initial trailers for The Hangover didn't do much for me either. It wasn't until the positive word of mouth started to spread that I checked it out and completely fell in love with it. The fact is the majority of the film is probably filled with material that you just can't put in a trailer.

More importantly, Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis are incredible comedic performers and are entirely capable of elevating anything they're in. If this movie were called Robert & Zack Mow a Lawn I'd still be there opening day because I'm that excited to see them on screen together. Sure, the odd couple/road trip premise is a predictable one but as far I'm concerned this is a can't miss combination of talent.

I'm not sure if it'll be the second greatest R.D.J. movie of all time (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the first as far as I'm concerned), but I'm still excited for Due Date.

The film hits theaters November 5, 2010.
