Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Ducktales season 3, episode 1, "Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks."

The season 3 premiere of DuckTales reveals that Violet Sabrewing, one of the young members of the supporting cast, has two fathers. This marks one of the latest attempts by DuckTales' showrunners to establish a more diverse Duckberg than what was seen in the original 1987 series.

Based on the Donald Duck comics of Carl Barks, the original DuckTales was one of the most popular animated series of the 1980s. It was also filled with a number of  stereotypes which the showrunners of the reboot series wished to avoid. This led to changes like Webby, who was a cliched "girly girl" in the original series, being given a more aggressive attitude in the new series. It also led to Gizmoduck (Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda) being established as Latinx, with his secret identity's name now being Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera.

Violet Sabrewing was introduced into Ducktales in the season 2 episode "Friendship Hates Magic!" She met Webby at the library where both were researching magic in a bid to understand the strange forces that nearly destroyed Duckberg. Finding they shared several other interests, the two decided to have a sleepover together. They also used their shared knowledge to save Lena De Spell; Magica De Spell's niece and Webby's best friend, who had become lost in the Shadow Realm after Ducktales' season 1 finale. Later episodes in season 2 established that the three girls had become best friends.

Duck Tales Violet Sabrewing and her two fathers

DuckTales' season 3 premier, "Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks," puts Violet front and center in the story, establishing her as a member of Huey Duck's Junior Woodchuck troop and his rival for the lofty position of their troop's Senior Woodchuck. It is revealed early on in the episode that Violet and Lena have become even closer than they were before, with Lena referring to Violet as her "sister from a couple of misters" and being quite literal: Lena was apparently adopted by Violet's parents, who were briefly mentioned as being two men in an earlier episode, but are shown for the first time on-screen in "Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks."

Violet's fathers (who wear matching "I'm With Dad" t-shirts) do not have any lines in the episode, nor are they given any names or a role beyond cheering on their daughter as she races across Woodchuck Island as part of the test to prove her worth. Co-Executive Producer and Story Editor Frank Angones explained, in a post on his blog, that this was due to there not really being a story around them beyond the "fun notion" when creating Violet that she had two "enthusiastic, overly supportive dads who love being dads." Angones further affirmed that he wasn't trying for "a cop out and a cookie" in introducing a gay couple into DuckTales, and that he hoped to find a way to develop Violet's fathers in future episodes.
